All joking aside, nicking people for expressing an opinion isn't very British.

Shockingly enough Lagos isn't even joking.

A chap decided to hold up a blank sheet of A4 paper in Parliament Square and was asked for his details.

He asked what would happen if he was to write 'not my king' on said paper, and was told that he would immediately be arrested under s.5 Public Order Act for causing offence.

Right out of the Russia/Belarus/North Korea playbook.

But there's apparently nothing to see here, as we're a fully-functioning democracy, and definitely not one of those banana republics that we used to point and laugh at.

Good god, that appears real (unless he's staged it with someone, as I can't tell if that's a genuine officer).

If true, that's awful. This is what people worried about with Patel's fascist Policing Act. it gave the police extra powers to clamp down on one-person protests (so not really protests at all as we know them).

We're on a dangerous path.

Is the answer where the police can largely behave with impunity with completely ineffective structures to hold them to account when officers individually or collectively abuse their powers?

No change there then.

There's no halfway house with free speech. It's either absolute or its not free. If there are time or location constraints, then it ain't free.

If what is said by a minority voice is objectionable, society serves as a feedback and moderates behaviour. That's how it's supposed to work. It's not always pretty but it's the price you pay for freedom.

Policing speech is going down a very slippery path and any defense or understanding of their actions is more than a trifle worryingly.

Stunt, deliberately put an expletive on the sign to get arrested, then make a fuss about freedom of speech

I think you're probably right but it could also be argued that it's a controlled opposition sign. A front page photo of an expletive on one prominent sign will likely tar a huge peaceful protest in the minds of the general public. Very easy to arrange.

People are free to say whatever we want, when we want, how we want…

They do seem very twitchy in particular around the royals. There’s an interesting little article in the Big Issue that talks about this, and includes examples from other royal events. https://www.bigissue.com/news/activism/why-are-anti-monarchy-protesters-being-ar

Like so many English things there absolutely is a halfway house. And we have policed speech in this country for a very very long time. Respectfully there seem to be a lot of people ITT who simply don’t know how the world works.

What so a bit like opposing the war in Putin's Russia ?

This may have been touched upon on the thread but haven’t had time to catch up on TW4TD of late.

I think it’s about a time and a place.

If I were a Man U fan and pitched up at a Liverpool celebratory parade of winning the FA Cup with a big MAN U banner and shouting anti Liverpool things I would likely be arrested for a breach of the peace - even if only for my own safety.

What you say is absolutely correct, we have policed speech in this country for a very very long time.

My point is that it isn't free speech if it's policed in this way.

'Free speech should only mean doing what I want them to do' isn't really free speech at all is it. If we can't let people voice dissent, then we're no better of than a dictatorship.

Although the idea has some potential. We could arrest people who don't vociferously support their own football team. Any silences (silent resistance obviously), audible grumbles or boos, get them in front of a judge. Or just skip that stage and take them straight to a cultural correction unit.

Where does this end though? If during the minutes silence when Sir Bobby Robson died someone was shouting 'F**k Bobby Robson' then they'd likely get removed and arrested but probably not charged

If someone turns up a t funeral and holds up signs about someone, or abuses their family again the same would happen.

Ultimately people are choosing to disrupt sombre occasions and spoil them for people wanting to show their respects, whilst people are allowed to protest these are almost public order offences and the sort of stuff that see people removed from situations in every town centre on weekly basis
