it's still the right thing to do. Reducing demand also massively reduces the enormous cost of the cap this Winter.
Agree on the smart metres, the visualisation helps guide usage.
But do you have to walk the hard yards to get to the smart metres ?
The visualisation can have its downsides, I stayed at an old girlfriends a couple of months ago and as well as being put in the spare room I was also castigated when she noticed that the electricity consumption had gone up by £0.04 because I forgot to switch off the extractor fan in the shower.

To be honest do adults in this country need that advice, surely people have enough commonsense to understand how to reduce energy especially with global warming/climate change and cost of living crisis?
But hey a nanny state is a nanny state I guess
Ah, the nanny state, which provides pensions for the elderly, free care for the sick, police forces to protect our property, a military to guard against invasion and other such terrible, molly-coddling things.
Set against which, a bit of useful advice is hardly a big deal.
I got mine down to a usage of 35w the other morning, I think the only thing using electricity was the meter itself.
I was delighted, so delighted that I celebrated by boiling a massive kettle and leaving the iron on.
I wouldn't be so hasty to sing the praises of Smart Meters myself. If it works for you, that's good but it's still technology beset by flaws. I work in the electricity industry and pretty much everyone colleague of mine I've spoken to about them - some of whom work in smart metering department - does not bother with one, . Probably says something. Article here outlines the main issues: https://www.theecoexperts.co.uk/energy-switching/top-problems-with-smart-meters

Cameron was fooking awful. A smiling sociopath who pushed through massive, ideologically driven austerity, privatisation, benefit cuts, tax breaks for the top set and culture wars.
He just looks 'good' compared to what followed and was just about clever enough to either use Lib Dems as human shields or do a 'compassionate' looking interview every so often.
In reality, he was Paul Hurst - corner cutting at every opportunity and trashing the country though his own hubris.

Yes, this "Cameron was alright" bollix has to stop.
He empowered Gove, who systematically destroyed local education authorities out of ideological vengeance, in the process destroying the Special Educational Needs services and referrals process.
12 years on and some children have gone through the whole of Primary and Secondary without the support that would have been given to them had they been born 10 years earlier.
Just one example.
See also an horrendous reshaping of benefits for those with disabilities or life-limiting illnesses, with private companies being given bonuses for finding reasons to disqualify people.
Two examples of how the most vulnerable in society were made to bear the brunt of Austerity cuts.
Austerity was a choice. The USA took the opposite course, and recovered much quicker from the 2008 Global Financial Crash.
Cameron choice.
A choice which made those with disabilities suffer.
David Cameron had a disabled daughter with a life-limiting illness. The cognitive dissonance and emotional short-circuiting required to follow these policies and not have any empathy for other families of lesser means in a similar position can only be described as sociopathic.
I'm not a fan.

Tsk, apparently they are thinking of providing free education for other peoples children as well, will it never end.

Exactly, thank you.
For others not already aware, you can also buy a home energy monitoring system (I have a fairly cheap one that cost about £30) which people can attach to their incoming main cable. A counterpart viewing unit is then placed in a convenient room to see the consumption going on in real time. By switching individual things on/off you can see exactly what's using what. More expensive ones allow you to link them to your mobiles.
There are also the good old fashioned Economy7 & Economy10 tariffs to consider, something the govt. seems to have forgotten about. Given that cheap rate costs (with Shell on an E7 tariff, but in practice my meter is an E10 one which registers cheap rate from 01.00-06.00; 14.00-17.00 and 21.00-23.00 BST) are less than half of normal rate, this is a huge saving esp for retirees or those WFH. I've got usage down to more than 50% cheap rate, Current rates are 38.803p per kWh day rate; 16.944p per kWh cheap rate.

If you have a Smart Meter, have you tried running the fan heater for an hour and noting down the energy consumption. Then put your jumper on and run the heater for another hour. Be sure to let us know what the readings are.

I've got one of those jumper operated boilers. They're brilliant. Worcester Argyle. I wouldn't be without it.
It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
One of the noted by Mass Observation during the war, was how people welcomed advice given, through posters - mostly as a slogan.
Many had expressed feelings of being lost, powerlessness and being on their own. The thought was they were making sacrifices whilst others were not
It was that feeling of reassurance that helped. The 'blitz spirit' was not a myth, more a feeling of a shared cause. Much as communal singing at church, and now various clapping, silences etc at football matches.
All that is needed is for Truss to say
' there are likely to be times of excess demand as there are every winter - however we may see reduced supply. You can help by reducing ............etc
Be wise .........energy wise
Yes it will come across as corny to many, and upset some righties who will be shrieking about more wokism - - but it will work
the old propaganda tool of 'acknowledge, solution and reassurance ' comes into play.
I doubt many in authority believe in the god nonsense, but they are aware of what inage to show in that regard. Truss, and others are t0o far up their own backsides to do anything that is not pandering to the idiocies of their far right followers.

Don't go to the big town of Lowestoft. It's not too far from you, but they'll steal the jumper off your back.

I'm reeling from the news that there appears to be electricity in Bungay.
It's like Halesworth, but from the 1880s, rather than the 1920s.

Well tell her she bloody well should be having it; it'll keep her warm. It did last night.
