No subject on 10:03 - Nov 7 by NthQldITFC | I can't get my head around the fact that intelligent people seem to be too frightened to admit to themselves what a catastrophic future is right upon us, and ANYTHING that starts to wake people up to that reality is a good thing. Nothing else matters. |
The greatest crime these days is inconveniencing somebody. Particularly if they have a child with them, or run their own business.

Followed closely by trying to convince someone that their poorly thought out opinion should carry the same weight as that of an expert.

We've had quite enough of experts, thank you very much.

Guess that explains successive UK governments since 2016. [Post edited 7 Nov 2022 17:30]

No subject on 16:39 - Nov 7 by GeoffSentence | The blocking roads argument is interesting, as the most persistent problem that the emergency services have with blocked roads is narrow ones blocked by cars parked on either side. |
Probably because at the moment this happens more than some loons gluing themselves to roads or climbing gantries. However, if said loons are allowed to continue then it will become more problematic. Saying that, people who block narrow roads are morons too.

Yes because global climate change only affects this country. Somewhere the size of Pakistan where a third[!] of the country has been under water. The likes of Bangladesh Droughts elsewhere, famine... Fires raging in the US and Australia. "It's the weather". No it isn't stupid.

As if by magic - Jeera appears. You took your time, didn't your Badger alarm go off old boy? I mean, I was obviously being deadly serious with my answer but thanks for explaining the situation for me. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Indeed. You don't get cat owners behaving in such a selfish, entitled manner.

No subject on 15:06 - Nov 7 by eireblue | Or, we need a line in the sand to focus people. For instance, electric cars, trains, bicycles exist. The ability to create electricity from non-stored energy exists. Humans are good a solving problems and making money, start talking away easy solutions, people will have to solve the problem of generating and storing enough of A and distributing it to B. |
However, there is not yet enough capacity to take up the slack. And the electricity for those cars, trains, etc., is still mostly generated with gas. Or coal, in some places. I really think technological development is going to be one of the routes out of this situation. It will need massive investment, government favour and probably also subsidies, to kick-start more growth in the sector. After all, if we're prepared to bale out troubled energy suppliers, why not put more money into renewables, storage systems and the like? That is what will finally do away with oil (as a fuel, if not as a raw material).

There's no realistic set of technologies that allows us to carry on with our lifestyles as they are, whilst slowly switching to different sources of energy, because it's becoming clearer and clearer that what we thought of as the shorter end of the timescale, was actually way too long. It's now. It's now, so it's either radically cut back on our lifestyles now AND develop and scale up what technologies we can and pray. Or, keep going on as we are fantasising about technological fixes that enable business as usual, and die. The mindset of 'how can we keep doing this sustainably' has to go. The inertia in the system takes out any room for fking around.

I have a cat presently outwitting me at every move and it's winding me up. There used to be three or four bothering me and I've managed to scare them off but this fecker is persistent. It uses a bunker/shed I have as a step up onto a wall right outside my bedroom window; all part of a run it uses every night. I've tried putting stuff on the bunker roof to put it off but to no avail. I've even sprayed WD40 on the lid hoping that either the smell would put it off or the cat would hit it at speed and skid off into oblivion, but again no results yet. Need to up my game.

Choose a corner and plant catnip. He won't leave it alone. Of course, all the other cats will come too, but hey.

Vinegar seems to work for me. Also, shelve the WD40 in favour of AK47, if you have that option.

I don't have an AK47. I do have a salt gun but it's not powerful enough to reach that far. I have tried vinegar as well as ground coffee beans but it doesn't seem to care. Also tried raw onions but I think a rat ate those. See, part of me thinks I need the cat around but if it's not even catching the rodents then what use is it.

Hmm, conditions need to be right for that but yes, worth a shot. Don't want to put out turmeric in case it's one of those cats who thinks it solves all ailments and turns up even more.
