He’s not as stupid as people are suggesting nor is he a business genius. His enterprises have been pretty hit and miss (as noted with the backing of a huge inheritance and cult like investors). What SpaceX has achieved is very impressive.
But he strikes me as a glorified PR man with a cult following - Tesla (like Twitter) has always looked like a ponzi scheme to me, a huge capitalisation completely dislocated with any consistent profits. I’ve followed their share performance and imagine a few people have had their fingers burned. Likewise Bitcoin that hes always pumped (sorry promoted). I wouldn’t trust the guy, let’s not forget that he’s also got himself in trouble with the SEC, I certainly wouldn’t invest in one of his firms. |  | |  |

I think this all depends on your definition of smart. Regardless of what he was born into he’s clearly got something about him to have the world talk about him and become the richest person on the planet. Even if it’s bluff and bluster that in itself isn’t an easy skill.

$44bn suggests he has a degree of motivation beyond that of most people's comprehension. If it was true, he could have killed it with enormous bot farms and other tech attacks for a fraction of the cost. |
