He got rich by being smart. |
He built a website 20 years ago with start up money from his dad, I’ll give him credit for that but nearly everything since he has either bought up the shares of other people’s companies or cooked up some ‘wacky’ idea full of holes. Literally in the case of ‘The Boring Company’.

I don't think there's any doubt that he tried to back away from the purchase and was forced to complete through the legal process.
If it's all part of some masterplan then he made the first bit very over-elaborate. |
I don't think there's a plan, I think it's way less considered than that. As you say he clearly wanted to back out of the deal, but found himself in too deep and knew a court ruling wouldn't go in his favour, so reluctantly went through with it.
Since then he's probably looked to drastically cut cost by ditching a load of staff, and increase revenue through such things as the blue tick to make it as operationally efficient as possible, but they've made a complete hash of all of that and now they are where they are.
It'll survive, he'll probably put a proper leadership team in there and build it back, but it certainly looks like he's lost control of the situation. |  |

It's quite probably the case that Twitter is a financial basket-case anyway. Yes there might be enormous (advertising) revenue, but annual losses are eyewatering, too ($221m in 2021, $1.1bn in 2020). | |
