Good piece on Harry Maguire which touches on the weirdness of some fans 08:38 - Nov 29 with 1626 viewsSteve_M

Player loses form and confidence so collective opinion derides him as crap and some idiots send him bomb threats. A sizeable number of fans do like bandwagon effects, following the herd is just easier clearly.

He's not amazing but he's the best CB England have and was MOTM last game.

Truly impaired.

He's been poor for utd. Better for England.

His poor form at Utd can be down to any number of reasons but its fair to say that the constant pile on probably hasn't helped.

ETH has probably done the right thing taking him out of the firing line but whether he will start regularly for Utd again remains to be seen.

We have seen it before with Utd defenders, Johnny Evans coped it from their fans big time but flourished ammeter he left.

Stones for me but the criticism Maguire has had has been disgusting. Half the problem is that it is just kids/adults with the brainpower of kids regurgitating the meme without any critical thinking. To me, it amounts to bullying on a huge scale and he's shown incredible strength to persevere when every time he sees his name in a tweet, youtube comment or newspaper, it has been as a figure of ridicule. The same people dishing out the abuse would be the first to beg for everyone to "be kind" if they were given a shred of the same negative attention. It's embarrassing how the media have played up to it at times too.

He has been poor for United but he's definitely a scape goat and an easy target, seems very fashionable to dig him out at every opportunity. I'm not convinced he's top class by any means but in an England shirt he's rarely let us down, has good big game experience and is certainly worth his place. The other point of course is if he's left out, who comes in? We're hardly blessed with world class centre halves that can offer more than Maguire. Certainly gets an unfair amount of criticism.

He's certainly not the only person culpable in the Utd dressing room

Feels like brining Ronaldo back really caused issues. OGS didn't really want him and accommodating him was detrimental to the team as a whole. Sancho has been v poor since he arrived too, Bruno dropped off.

To lay it all at Maguires feet is harsh

Player plays really well and is in demand by bigger clubs. Fans take is that the player should show loyalty and stay.

Player loses confidence and has a few bad matches. Fans take is to drop him and get rid. No loyalty at all.

Following the herd certainly is easier as TWTD demonstrates daily.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

United don't a play a system which suit him. He lacks the pace to play in a 4 against the top teams, especially last year when United had no defensive midfield protection, but playing him a 5 utilises his ball-playing ability as the spare man.

In the 5 hours of coverage dedicated to him on 5 Live yesterday, the consensus seems to be Utd ask their wide CBs to push on more, leaving far more space behind him. Which obviously isn’t ideal given his lack of pace. For England he can be a traditional CB which suits him better.

‘Weirdness of some fans” is a tad generous to the absolute a-holes that hound him. Shame the police can’t trace the bomb threats, as someone needs locking up for a bit to help them reflect.
