Four foods we only had at Christmas 12:49 - Dec 22 with 4872 views | gtsb1966 | In our house when i was a kid. Turkey, gammon joint , celery and a box of dates. Why the second two I'll never know as nobody ate them and they were thrown in the bin. The turkey carcass was put in the garden for the birds to peck at. To this day I hate celery and turkey stew and turkey curry . [Post edited 22 Dec 2022 12:50]

Four foods we only had at Christmas on 15:47 - Dec 22 by ElephantintheRoom | Christmas cake and Christmas pudding? Not a food as such - but some fairly disgusting liquor chocolates were an Xmas staple at our house. And those of a certain age will remember tangerines wrapped individually in paper was an Xmas treat in the stocking. |
My mrs eats Christmas pudding all year.

Four foods we only had at Christmas on 17:17 - Dec 22 with 1546 views | Chondzoresk | Chestnuts….my dad loved em at Xmas. I had to get them from the trees along Heath Lane and Pearson Road. The Turkey carcass was boiled up for stew as I seem to remember, that’s after it had been on the side at room temperature for 4 days or so….urgh.
Four foods we only had at Christmas on 17:23 - Dec 22 with 1542 views | DJR | When I was young, chicken was a luxury, so it was only on Christmas day that we had it. Turkey didn't come along until I was in my mid-teens.

It is unfashionable (for a reason???), but you can get it in most supermarkets. I would guess Morrisons might have the biggest choice of sherries, given that 99% of what they sell featured in Dale Winton's era of Supermarket Sweep...

Four foods we only had at Christmas on 08:00 - Dec 23 with 1401 views | Churchman | Turkey - lasted forever. To this day, cold on Boxing Day is the last I want to see of it. Walnuts and a pair of dodgy nutcrackers. Hated them then an do now. Bits of shell flying about the room for what? Bruised fingers, waste of time. Ye Olde Oak Ham - ham shaped tin with grey and green jelly covering a pink mass of horror. Awful Dates - they were called ‘Eat Me’ and had a nobbly stick to prong them out with. Liked them Chipolatas - best bit of Christmas dinner. There was never much alcohol in the house. Dry and sweet martini, stones ginger wine, advocaat for my grandmother - replaced with lemon curd for a laugh one year - she never noticed, bottle of Bristol Cream. [Post edited 23 Dec 2022 8:13]

Four foods we only had at Christmas on 13:50 - Dec 22 by bluelagos | +1 for the only time we ever ate Turkey. When it all calmed down, Mum would get a snowball (advocat and lemonade?) and the old man a cigar. As sprogs, we'd get to fight over the matchmakers and of course the quality street. Purple ones were reserved for my Dad twtd |
Snowball. Still a Christmas morning (pre-lunch anyway) tradition in our house. Half and half, avocaat and lemonade, a squeeze of lime juice, or in the old days a little Rose's lime cordial, all over lots of ice and topped with a maraschino cherry. Lovely and not too alcoholic.

Four foods we only had at Christmas on 10:14 - Dec 23 with 1313 views | Swansea_Blue | Port for me. Never touch it at any other time of the year except Christmas morning - I suppose I was an old kid when that habit kicked in. The Mrs' family were allowed to have sugar on their grapefruit at Christmas (times must have been hard in deepest, darkest Wales). She still does it now. Cut the grapefruit the night before and leave them cut side down on a plate of brown sugar. All a bit odd if you ask me.

Mothers Pride - who can forget it. We actually used to have Ye Olde Oak sandwiches after Christmas ‘to use it up’. Piccalilli was about the best thing to disguise the foulness of it. Talk about desperate. There were no use by dates then. The levels of food poisoning must have been phenomenal.

It was definitely only the piccalilli and the low food expectations of the time that made it so tasty/bearable. Mayo didn't reach our house f or another decade and salad cream never went with ye olde ham

You are right. Strangely, salad cream didn’t cut it with the gelatinous horror ham, yet it did the job on most cold stuff. Even if it had existed when I was a kid I’m not sure my dad would have allowed ‘that foreign muck’ in the house. The nearest we got to exotic was tinned spaghetti. Anyone remember Newberry Fruits? Considered a Christmas treat, these came in a rectangular box and consisted of jelly, a phenomenal amount of sugar and dye. The red ones were the best.

Alphabetti spaghetti I hope. Think salad cream may have been a tad to liquidy and would just slide off the gelatinous rich 'ham'.

Probably was alphabetti. It was ok. Looking it up, it was actually introduced to the U.K. by Heinz in 1926. It’s amazing how far back some of these things date. I used to like salad cream sandwiches. It beat the heck out of bread and butter.

Imagine how sophisticated and exotic you would have felt cracking open a tin of alphabetti spaghetti in the 1920,s. I used to like/survive a luncheon meat, lettuce and salad cream sandwich back in the day. Probably on mother's pride bread and lashings of cheap margarine. Gonna say it again, kids today don't know there born.

Pure survival for me. Luncheon meat was pre cut. Spam was not, but I gather they’re the same stuff really. I don’t remember a difference in the ghastly texture or taste, especially as the salad cream did a good job disguising it.

Luncheon meat with branston or salad cream was the go-to for me too. Whether I liked it or not. The average family didn't have the money to spend on luxuries such as providing the kids with a nicer lunch! There was the bonus that no one wanted to steal it though.

Think I would alternate between salad cream an Branston. There was no real alternative except the dreaded sandwich spread.. Yer, I don't think flavor was of major importance. Was more a case of eat this luncheon meat sandwich you will no longer be hungry.

My dad used to use for fishing sometimes which should have told us all we needed to know. Sandwich spread, sort of minced up coleslaw wasn't it. I liked it for a little while just because it wasn't luncheon meat.
