Shudder.

O'Neill: Lambert New Deal the Right Decision to Give Club Stability 3rd Jan 2020 14:58
General manager of football operations Lee O’Neill says manager Paul Lambert’s new contract which runs until 2025 gives the club stability upon which it can build over the next few seasons. 32

Despite what many will say now, the majority supported Evans for allowing the contract extension to happen. But I agree, that story does send a shudder alone my spine.

Really?

I remember being at Wycombe and there being complete disbelief he’d got that deal.

I have to admit, my memory of it is one of complete shock. One minute we were discussing who his replacement could be if he was canned, the next we were reading that he was signing a multi-year deal.

Not a chance that is true, at that point I think most thought he was far closer to the sack than a new deal

Yes, the 5-3 defeat at Lincoln a few days before was an end-of-manager type performance. Even those willing to give Lambert more time as the best short-term chance of promotion thought a contract extension ridiculous.

You are definitely misremembering that one Matty.

You must've been getting laid at the time or something.

Everyone else was in a state of shock.

The state of denial comes with the trauma experienced during that period. Understandable really.

To take my mind of such things I prefer to just reflect on our glorious FA Cup trophy win during Paul Jewell's time in charge.

The whole era would have made for a sad novel.

I can see the opening line now:

It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times.

Oddly enough, we then went on a run that took us to 1st place in league one by then end of January.

We then proceeded to completely fall apart.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Horrific, what was ME thinking ? I mean we made a great start upto October, but even then 5 years .? The sort of deal you might give someone who takes you up and is top of the championship in January, not because they won 10 games before Christmas!

ME was so so clueless

It was a standing joke on here that he signed the new contract after an abysmal run of form.

It was complete madness.

In fairness, Evans would’ve started thinking about the extension when we were getting results. He was never the quickest to get anything done!

Indeed, that was the case. The deal with Lambert was agreed ages before it was announced but, from what I was told, he wouldn't commit until deals were done with some of his staff to get them contracted for the same period. So, by the time it was all finally agreed, we were on a downturn and his departure had looked more likely.
