Emma Radacanu - one hit wonder or just unlucky? 11:13 - Jan 6 with 2697 views | ringwoodblue | I’ve just seen that Radacanu has retired from yet another tournament through injury. I know she’s only 20 but either this girl is extremely unlucky or she just can’t cut it and the US Open win was a one-off never to be repeated.

Without Williams dominating.... on 11:25 - Jan 6 with 2623 views | Bloots | ....everything, women's tennis just seems to throw up totally random winners without anyone dominating. I'm no expert but on the rare occasions I see any news about a women's major I never recognise the name of the winner. I expect it was just her turn.

Emma Radacanu - one hit wonder or just unlucky? on 11:27 - Jan 6 with 2588 views | DropCliffsNotBombs | Turning your ankle on an apparently slippery surface is unfortunate and a bit different to the other muscular injuries she picked up last year, which is very common for a first full year on tour. She may well only ever win the one grand slam, especially with the quality of Swiatek, Jabeur etc but 'she just can't cut it' is very premature. (Edited to spell Swiatek correctly) [Post edited 6 Jan 2023 11:28]

Yeah this, I think a few big names have retired over the years, used to recognise a lot of the winners, especially Wimbledon, but the last few years not heard of them before. Raducanu still young and plenty of time to get better and sort the injuries out, although this one was unfortunate due to a slip. Don’t think she should’ve been honoured with an MBE mind you, something surely reserved until the end of a glittering career.

Emma Radacanu - one hit wonder or just unlucky? on 11:31 - Jan 6 with 2534 views | vilanovablue | She got injured as they moved to indoor courts due to weather and they weren't up to standard. Will she win another major, possibly not. I do think she is going to have a decent career though.
Emma Radacanu - one hit wonder or just unlucky? on 11:31 - Jan 6 with 2522 views | LankHenners | Rolling your ankle is just bad luck whenever it happens and nothing you can really do to prevent it. Some sportspeople seem to pick up more injuries than others, just one of those things and doesn't really mean she can't 'cut it'. Plus in a tennis calendar you're playing an awful lot so not much time to recover from injuries unless you choose to sit lots of tournaments out which they would be unwilling to do for obvious reasons. Outside of the Williams sisters there hasn't been much consistency in terms of women's grand slam winners anyway so maybe she had her hot streak (very) early. You don't win a grand slam through fluke or luck, even if you avoid top ranking players for most of it, so if that ends up her only win it won't mean she's not a great player.

Emma Radacanu - one hit wonder or just unlucky? on 11:33 - Jan 6 with 2489 views | Darth_Koont | Looking at players like Nadal and Murray who have sacrificed so much and gone through so many physical issues, it’s apparent the potential toll on the body when training and competing at the highest level. It’s hours on a hard court every day, probably hitting hundreds of thousands of balls in a year. And hitting them very hard. I say “potential toll” because someone like Federer was in comparison much more free from injury. I’m guessing Raducanu isn’t lucky enough to be like Federer but more like Nadal. But she’s still young and has probably been developing while training and competing intensely over the past few years. So this could be something she gets over when that settles down.

I play league Tennis, and I've had more injuries from Tennis than I ever did from 15 years of playing Rugby and Football. You just get so many innocuous injuries, side strains, torn ligaments around the ribs from serving, shoulder pain, ankle strains, pulled muscles. Started Yoga a few years ago as I found that really helped with muscle injuries. Raducanu has been unlucky with injuries, but you see so many youngsters across all sports at that age that suffer due to the body getting used to the rigours. I remember Gerrard having constant ankle injuries in his late teens early 20's and there was talk about how this could impact him long term, but he got over them and obliviously flourished. And some people, quite a lot actually, just really struggle with the rigours of professional sport and how it affects their bodies, must be incredibly frustrating.

Isn't Squash the toughest on the body in terms of stopping/ starting and injuries etc?

I played tennis at county level. Now , in my mid 70s I am the (not very) proud possessor of 2 prosthetic hips, one prosthetic knee, and two shoulder replacements. Have I been unlucky?

Emma Radacanu - one hit wonder or just unlucky? on 12:06 - Jan 6 with 2219 views | ArnoldMoorhen | Three main points: 1 she won the US Open when it had the weakest field in living memory, due to Covid. 2 it was still an incredible achievement, mentally and physically, but people who thought "She's the new Steffi Graff" should probably temper expectations. 3 tennis is a worldwide sport, played by millions and with thousands of ranked players. If she "only" builds a career where she consistently ranks top 32, is seeded for Opens, and makes some Quarter Finals, then she will be the equivalent of a band who had one defining Number One, a couple of Top Tens and a few Top 40s, rather than a "One Hit Wonder". Idiotic decision to ditch the coach who took her to the US Open win, though. Her Dad controls her career, and seems to have an approach that you take on a coach, such everything you can from them as quickly as possible, then move on to the next one. I am reminded of Shane Warne's maxim about coaching "Have you got lots of people giving you advice and trying to change how you (play)? Don't listen to 'em!" A top coach will create the climate and atmosphere around a player, know them inside out and adjust training schedules accordingly. And get them going in to matches in the right frame of mind, with a plan. To think that they are primarily about "teaching new tricks" once the player is at elite level seems a bit off to me.

Believe it is, wasn't saying Tennis is though, just comparing the sports I have played and Tennis has been the most niggly from an injury perspective.

No worries! I have friends who play Squash and it is terrible for the knees, but also I think it's one of the best sports to play for fitness. Real Ying and Yang with Squash.
