Jesus Christ. The parents should be in jail. What a messed up country
I can't fathom the idea that anyone would keep such as dangerous piece of equipment somewhere a child could find it.
It's crazy that there will be people in the states who make their house childsafe with covers for electrical sockets, will make sure not to keep detergent and bleach in low cupboards, will take every reasonable and unreasonable precaution, but still keep their gun in their bedside drawer, loaded and ready to use.

Had a situation at kids school this week… little boy (aged 8) pulls out his plastic toy knife his parents got him for Xmas, teacher takes it away from him… so he goes back in his bag and pulls out his dads penknife that he nicked from the kitchen draw at home…
Obviously not as bad as a gun, but I was still in the realms of WTF

Jesus. Glad nothing came of it, but it's still only one wrong decision/choice away from tragedy. It's difficult because kids playing with toy swords/guns or imaginary ones is so engrained in our childhoods, but there is an age where a child doesn't understand the consequences of the real thing versus the toys/games.

So that's what inspired and instructed that 6 year old?
Agree parents are culpable, I bet they're like the female US politician who had family photo with guns, and will also have pictures with the 6 year old tiring guns.

If only the teacher had had one. Would have been able to protect themself.
Perhaps they could install automated turrets in all classrooms that detect firearms and immediately obliterate their wielder.
I was going to jest that it would be just like American police to shoot first and ask questions later but they only do that when they're shooting at targets running away.

Because in an atmosphere where people feel they have to be responsible for their own protection (and in rural areas perhaps not unjustified, with the nearest policeman maybe 30 miles away), then that weapon is a necessary comfort. During a home invasion in the middle of the night, you don't want to be fumbling for the gun cabinet keys.
That fear (justified or not - but certainly stoked by pro-gun advocacy organisations) is greater than concern that your child might take and use your weapon.

Christmas card! Peace and goodwill to all men!
I like America and Americans. Great people, but there are a small percentage of knuckle heads. Not least the Christmas card seven.

Can see that fear/paranoia (take yer pick) will be the over riding driver for many ordinary gun holders, same as for young kids carrying knives in the UK.
But thinking it through, what are they hoping to achieve, to win a gun fight in their home? Or do they presume that your waving a gun will lead to an intruder laying down their arms and peacefully submitting?
In Lagos my first appartment was fairly secure, but we had no armed security, same when travelling unless we asked for it (I used armed escorts just 3 times in 8 years when I felt there was a specific risk/need) The level of armed robberies/shooting far exceeded rural America.
We got offered a 'panic button' for our homes, press it and armed response would arrive within a few minutes. I refused it, I could see no scenario where I wanted armed gunmen (on my side) entering my home when there were already armed gunmen there (not on my side). That would make a bad situation worse, possible gun fight and/or me as a hostage.
So whilst I accept 100% the point you make that some people hold guns for their own safety, I think the thinking is deeply flawed and poorly thought out. Person with gun enters your home, he robs you, you live to tell the tale. You get to replace whatever he's stolen, you get to carry on with your life.
And I say that as someone who was arm robbed (in a vehicle not my home)...a deeply unpleasant and scary event. But I thank fck no one in my car had a gun and dread to think how that would have played out.
So that's what inspired and instructed that 6 year old?
