What's the score with drinking and riding? 17:37 - Jan 9 with 3902 views | bluelagos | Pushbike rather than motorbike. Is there a limit? Can you get done? What if you stick to the pavements? Fines? Points? Bans? Given you don't need a licence to cycle am struggling to see any of these...? (Not been done, just wondering on the legalities of it)

At my age, too much drinking defo doesn't lead to much of that type of riding...

To answer your question one of my friends did get pulled over once for being drunk in charge of a pushbike. It was New years eve and we were cycling from Ipswich to Kesgrave. Don't think him asking the copper if they didn't have anything better to do was helpful, but I still think he had a point. Didn't get done for any offence though.

What's the score with drinking and riding? on 17:46 - Jan 9 with 2920 views | MattinLondon | Unless there are signs stating otherwise then it’s illegal to ride a pushbike on the pavement. And it’s illegal to drink and cycle. Drunk cyclists can be fined up to £2,500 but won't lose their driving licence if caught over the limit. But if a cyclist is stupid enough to cycle over the limit then I’d imagine the potential consequences could result in severely injuring themselves.

Yes he did. A) he wasn't drunk, B) the copper was incredibly rude and C) it was chucking it down with rain and meant I had to stand for 10 minutes on Foxhall Road.

Oh sorry. I read it that he was drunk rather than being pulled over in the suspicion of being drunk. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We were fine. We had had a couple of pints in town and were cycling back to go to a friends house party. Bag of bottles jangling on our handlebars probably didn't help but that copper meant I turned up at a the party like a drowned rat! This was years ago, we were only 17 or 18.

How do you get to the pub and back if you cannot cycle "over the limit?". The limit is for motorised vehicles.

Walk or get a taxi. And you can be over the limit on a cycle.

I don't think plod are actively looking for drunk cyclists The law is ther 'if' a cyclist is/has causing/caused harm or damege, or is a causing a nuiscance

The offence is 'being drunk in charge of a pedal cycle'. The riders behaviour would likely have a bearing on whether he was reported for the offence or not. It's a very old offence but still relevant in that it's probably an important way of offering some protection for a cyclists safety if necessary.

Ridiculous. There is no "limit" for cyclists. I'm not advocating getting blind drunk and cycling, but a few pints is OK. I'm guessing you live somewhere where taxis are readily available, you have tons of spare cash to pay for them or the pub is within easy walking distance. We are not all so lucky. It's the nanny state gone mad!

Would you drive after a few pints? Cyclist peddles home after a few pints, is unsteady and falls over in front of a car. Or pissed cyclist peddles fast along the pavement and crashes into a pedestrian. I don’t have tonnes of spare cash, I simply realise that alcohol and cycling don’t mix that well. And the nanny state comment is totally pathetic. [Post edited 9 Jan 2023 20:55]

Drunk pedestrians should always walk on the inside of the pavement..just like young kids.

Health and safety gone mad? This law was brought out in the 1800s! If you walk home drunk and wobble off the pavement into a cyclist, you could be arrested for drunk and incapable or drunk and disorderly if necessary.

It’s also an offence to be drunk in charge of a pram. Not that you’d know looking at some of the Mums around here. [Post edited 9 Jan 2023 21:41]

No, I would not drive after any pints, but there is a difference between a car and a bike. There really is. There is a difference also between riding a bike and walking. Is walking home from the pub acceptable in your Brave New World, or are pubs not permitted?
