When you've moved home, have you notified DVLA? 15:56 - Jan 12 with 6280 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

I've only just realised you can get a £1000 fine for not notifying them, although my licence is registered at my parent's address who I visit regularly, so I still have access to any mail from them. Does this therefore count as one of my permanent addresses so I don't have to inform them?

Was starting to fill out the form to notify them anyway, because I thought why ever not? But then it wants all my addresses for the last 5 years. When they realise I've moved a few times without informing them are they going to hit me with a fine, or is all that forgotten now that I'm fessing up?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I still had the old paper one with my parents address on it until about 15 years ago. I had moved multiple times. Updated to a photo ID plastic card with the address i was at at the time and informed them of a move 2 years ago and was issued with a new one. No fines or other issues.
I would be honest with them and say it was an oversight on your part and i'm sure you'll be ok.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Your driving licence, be it provisional or full is a legal document and proof of residence, therefore, you have a responsibility to ensure that all the relevant details are correct. You should also remember to update your V5C, vehicle log book if you own a vehicle. This responsibility will also include some conditions that affect your health, even something as simple as the need to wear glasses for driving.

If you own a car, you also have to change the address on the vehicle log book.

It seems to me you have done nothing really wrong. The point of having an address is that you can be contacted, so if you have moved about a lot, it strikes me that your parents' address serves this purpose well. And this would be my defence to any attempt to fine you, which is probably unlikely.

Indeed, I suppose you could just carry on as you are and make sure your parents open any DVLA-looking mail, particularly if you are likely to move about lot, and just use that defence in the unlikely event they ever found out and tried to fine you. But personally I would change the address once I realised I ought to.

EDIT: the proof of residence point mentioned in the previous post is a very good point, and points to changing the address.

"When they realise I've moved a few times without informing them are they going to hit me with a fine, or is all that forgotten now that I'm fessing up?"

Forgotten, although you could just say you've been at your parents. I updated mine a year or two back from a similar situation, gave all my uni addresses, no problem.

Just watch on the photo update options. They'll take your passport photo if you don't select to submit one, which in my case reverted to a picture of me at 16. I'm 29.

If a full licence holder, then you're more likely to be caught out if stopped by the police, then you would have some questions to answer! If a provisional licence holder, then, if and when presenting for a driving test, the licence would be retained and your test cancelled at your expense. You could also factor into this, how you may be impacted should you have a need to ever claim through your car insurance, which may then become void having provided the provider with incorrect details!

Does that mean people think your driving licence is a forgery, and won't let you into pubs?

I got stopped by the rozzers and the address on my licence wasn't up to date. They had a bit of a moan about it and said technically they could report me for it but didn't on the assurance from me I would get it updated pronto.

But if you got a real a**hole copper, you can be done for it.

They will crush you car. And the car of your parent (you imply you only have one parent), who is an accomplice in you dastardly attempt to avoid parking tickets.

If you really want to avoid parking tickets etc, you need to have your vehicle flagged as 'Superintendent Only' at DVLA ( ie only an officer of Superintendent or higher rank can access the record.

The intention of the law is to ensure you and your vehicle are traceable in the event of incident / offence. I think most plod would exercise a bit of common sense with mid-20's graduates who move addresses every 9 months, understanding that their parents' place is their best fixed residence.

FWIW I didn't own or use a car in that period except my mums, which was also registered there. If that wasn't the case I imagine I'd have needed to update it long before.

Given you've admitted above that your own licence wasn't up to date (and you're obviously a sh!t driver to boot) I'm not really sure you're in a position to be crowing too much.

I would just put the new address and and the address i would simply just put your mums address. I have my works address on my driving license but i do own my yard, and its come in handy once twice with the law.

You could get a £1000 fine but that's the max and no-one gets the max.
If you're really really sorry and they like the cut of your jib then you're more likely to get £60 and 3 points as per local papers.
The Busies have Vehicle Recognition in their cars and the number plate is checked with DVLA for valid MOT and insurance. It does not check the owners license, probably because it could be someone else driving.
If the Busies stop you 'cos they think you're drunk or you're involved in an accident or you're speeding or for whatever reason then they will ask to see your license.

I very much doubt they'd fine you. I did something similar when I was back at Uni, never bothered to update my driving license constantly but whenever I was asked for X years of addresses, I always put them down to the best of my knowledge. Was never questioned.

Older posters might also want to check the expiry date on their licence. Mine, for no apparent reason, ran out in 2020 and I had to renew it. When I told my friends, several of them found the same.
It wasn't that we were any particular age, in fact my renewed licence will run out when I am 70.

Your licence expires every 10 years, and has to be renewed.
