Slightly surprised by the level of negativity on here 19:37 - Jan 14 with 6189 views | Dubtractor | Nothing has really changed since this morning, when optimism was overflowing with the 2 new signings. We've just got a draw (albeit one that should have been seen out as a win) against probably the best team in the league, from a fairly entertaining game. I appreciate that it being an injury time equaliser does impact things somewhat. We knew before today that we struggle to kill off games, which is exactly why we've just signed two strikers. Don't get me wrong, we need to get back on the winning train soon, and ideally string a few wins together, but I'm surprised by the switch-around in mood based on one game where we played OK. FWIW, the massive breaks in play for the substitutions, their defenders head injury, and Burns treatment, killed our momentum when we were well on top. I'm certain we'd have got another goal and killed the game without those stoppages.

Was going to say similar. 'Abject' is a frankly silly word to use.

Slightly surprised by the level of negativity on here on 13:34 - Jan 15 by tractorshark | I’m not slightly surprised, I’m absolutely astounded. Look how far we have come in the last year or so, there is genuine hope in the club now. Three things to keep in mind… 1) Our next 10 games are: Oxford (a), Morecambe (h), Cambridge (a), Sheff Wed (h), Bristol Rovers (a), Forest Green (h), MK Dons (a), Burton (h), Accrington (h), Bolton (a). I seriously doubt we will win them all but with the exception of 2, you’d fancy your chances against the rest. It’s certainly more comfortable than the last 10 (Charlton, Cheltenham, Exeter, Fleetwood, Peterborough, Wycombe, Oxford, Portsmouth, Lincoln, Plymouth). 2) Clearly we need to improve in certain areas but that’s why we’ve signed new players. You have to give them and the team a chance. 3) There is a massive sense of entitlement amongst certain Ipswich fans. Maybe it’s borne out of opposition managers and fans saying how good we are. Personally, I think it stems back to the attitude of one season in League One will do us good and allow us to reset. With the exception of Norwich and Southampton, recent history has shown us that rarely happens after relegation. This squad is good for this division but maybe the team is not quite as good as the actual individuals. I certainly don’t think we would be top 8 of the Championship without quality additions. But it is good enough to get us automatically promoted this season, so stick with them. Yes, we’re frustrated after yesterday but it was imperative we didn’t lose. We’re still right in this. I have read a lot of things following the Plymouth game about the team being mentally weak but the same thing could be levelled at some of our fans. It’s great to see the ground full and the away support is exceptional but there are clearly people right now who are picking and choosing when they follow Ipswich. But football ain’t for the faint-hearted. This season can still end in glory and promotion. I still fancy us for automatic promotion. I also know there will come a time when we’re really in the doldrums again. But that’s the beauty of football and the beauty of supporting a club like Ipswich. The highs taste so much sweeter because we know what it’s like to experience the lows. So keep the faith and a sense of perspective. The good times are coming. |
There is some analysis from some posters of our perceived problems on the pitch after every wobble, and whilst I disagree with the validity of much of it, it's fair game for a football forum and discussion. The narrative I'm really bored of seeing is this idea that we have the biggest funds so automatic promotion this season should be nailed on. Football doesn't work like that. Would failure to be promoted be, er, a failure? Yes of course. Would it be a catastrophe? Who knows. We've been lurching from what we think is our nadir to a new nadir with no end in sight for so long, you are right that now there is serious backing and structure being put into place there is a sense of unreality about how football actually works in the real world. You know, there are other clubs fighting for promotion, some with essentially Champ squads. And Argyle are a season ahead to boot. There's still such a long way to go. Football isn't for some fans perhaps. On a related note, shame on the pissed up Pilgrim wannabe tough boys on the train yelling "you disabled c---" and the like at other passengers. Karma will get you sooner rather than later. For balance, had a good chat with some football minded Pilgrims as well (young and old) and as ever every club has its share of decent fans and total divs. Gutted and so deflated immediately post match, but it was an exciting if nervey game and a point was probably a fair reflection. Better game management needed imo. COYFB

Because, of course, there is no level of appraisal of a performance that falls between "abject" and "good". That said, I'd say much about our recent performances has been good, just the same recurring frustrations in too many of them.

This forum is becoming unbearable with an increasing number of people going entirely by the last game. Sheff Wed have Plymouth before us. There's every chance we could go above them on 11th Feb with a win. Or even go within a point or two of Plymouth. There's going to be a lot more twists this season.

No promotion, after being top 2 for so long and reinforcing with 2 forwards from the Premier League at great expense & an international midfielder, along with the injuries clearing up and a more or less fully fit squad, would indeed be a catastrophe.

Yep, And seemingly half this board think Plymouth and Wednesday are going to win every single one of their remaining games, all 15-0 I suspect. Its mental, a point against the league leaders is not a 'bad' point, its a good point, yes, we haven't closed the gap, but then they haven't pulled further away. We win at Oxford next week, and they fail to beat Cheltenham, (who are going to park the team coach and a steam roller), and suddenly its all back on isn't it?

It would be failure. No one has denied that. Perhaps you should give the team a chance with the Premier League forward you keep mentioning? The difference between us and Wednesday right now if we have drawn two and where they have won. That's it. You are being so incredibly negative and trying to suck the joy out of the season so you can keep banging on about the banter era.

One injured, and one on the bench as he'd been traveling from the north west all week. Give it a chance to play out. We've 100% strengthened. But we've not played our hand in that strengthening yet.

There is nothing wrong with being positive or negative, you do you, but don’t be “astounded” that so many people are very annoyed at the abject performances the team are putting in and the idea that we seem to be determined to throw away promotion after being top 2 for ages. It is absolutely vital that we go up this year. There is no excuse. If I was Gamechanger I would fire quite literally everyone if we don’t make it after all this investment infrastructure and staff, from Ashton down. I do get it. And then it’ll only be the middle of March and then it’ll only be the middle of May, and then we’ll all be talking about how we are going to win the transfer window again. It’s all so depressingly familiar. Anyway I’m even annoying myself now so I’ll shut up.

Your first sentence doesn't make sense, not on the terms you have used to explain why fans are in denial or whatever it is with regard to being so used to failure and disappointment. If in March we are off the pace of autos you will have a point, of sorts. Let's see how we do over the next few weeks with our new recruits, assuming they are fit ;)

But those two teams only need to get the same number of points as us to get automatic promotion. Good chance we won't win all our remaining matches. I think some people have gone overboard on the negativity but the reality is we are third and, even with our much improved overall club performance levels are finding it difficult to catch the top 2. This is not impossible to turn around but based on what has already happened this season unless there is a bit more guile and tactical smarts we are heading for the playoffs.

Hello Dyllers Whilst the performances recently haven't been 'abject', they certainly haven't been terrific either. I'm probably closer to Chico's pessimism than most others here - my concerns are that tactically, we seem to be struggling, and we cannot, cannot close games out. I wonder just how heavy a toll the Charlton debacle has taken. Half a season to go, but the ghosts of so many seasons are lining up to haunt us.

" Some base their position on hope and faith, others on historical precedent." Again, doesn't even make sense because your position (of relentless negativity, sorry, realism) is based on ITFC having a completely new structure and backing. But you seem to be trolling so let's not bother bruv.

Fungers! I hear you, and that's the nature of being a Town fan last two decades. But the ghosts are only haunting the fans. It's a new team and set up. EDIT: Totally agree about the problem of not seeing games out and/or scoring more, and it's hugely annoying... this is surely in part why we have Hirst and Broadhead in the house.
