Lineker's social media comments 09:09 - Mar 8 with 11785 viewsTrequartista

I understand Lineker is a high profile presenter for a public broadcaster, and he mildly irritates me on motd, but for goodness sake, is it not obvious that freedom of speech has to apply to everyone.

He's not broadcasting these views on the Ten O'Clock News. I think that those who cite cancel culture as a thing (as i do) and then think Lineker should be silenced over this (as i don't) are a perfect example of those 'fighting the culture wars' for want of a better description.

Hmmmm.
You spend a lot of time speculating on new poster’s identities.
Less generous posters might consider you to be a rather busy little stirrer….

How was the holiday Phil sent you on? Hopefully time spent on golden sands and blusea.

Careful. You'll have DK on here in a minute saying that the BOD are far right Israeli Zionist apologists.

Actually, I was going to say that this was a good and welcome statement by them.

I only wish they’d extend that to Palestinians. And just so we’re accurate, I’d call them right-wing apartheid apologists.

Thanks for the clarification. Although I don’t believe your description to be accurate.

Don’t be disingenuous.

I’m talking about decades of oppression and occupation. Condemning violence on both sides is missing the point – especially if you’re still rabidly against pro-Palestinian protesters and politicians.

None of which changes that on this particular score, showing solidarity and helping defend asylum seekers, they are correct. But thanks for making it about you and your smeary little games.

In fairness to Koonters, the fault is mine. I saw the BOD link and yanked a koonters chain. Which in hindsight was unnecessary and derails what is a very important thread.

More a case of not thinking before posting than anything malicious.

Interesting development.

As Umberto Eco once said

"Today a country belongs to the person who controls communications."

EDIT: The article suggests that those on the right see the RSPB as a dangerous organisation. What crazy times we live in.

Laurence Fox was apparently one of the speakers, but my god, how is he going to react when the panto season comes along, and there are Widow Tw*nkeys throughout the land corrupting our children?

Imported American culture war b*llocks. There have been no issues with drag for decades (centuries if you push the meaning) and suddenly a moral panic about them.

There are lots of things going on in this country that are similar to those involving the far-right Israeli government but credit is due to the many people in Israel who have protested on the streets, and to the reservists who have also protested in their own way.

In this country, we all just take it lying down.

No wonder they get away with it.

Outrageous. They might as well re-name it the Tory Broadcasting Corporation.

As for "The BBC said it considered Lineker's "recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines ... he should "keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies" -

If that's so, why didn't they suspend Fiona Bruce a long time ago for intervening on QT with comments that were clearly pro-Tory, when she's supposed to be only the neutral chairperson/presenter, not a contributor herself? (rhetorical question of course).

Btw just hearing live on R4 right now that Lineker didn't *agree* to step back, he's actually been suspended because he refused to apologise.

Yes, it's all part of the current anti-trans campaign (gender recognition and all that), which as with most things has its origins in the States.

The Wikipedia entry for Turning Point UK shows its links to the US and indicates it is a pretty nasty organisation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turning_Point_UK

This from Wiki.

"On the day of its social media launch in February 2019, Tory MPs including Jacob Rees-Mogg and Priti Patel tweeted supportive messages for the group. Labour MP David Lammy observed that the launch and its Tory support are evidence that the Conservative Party "openly promotes hard-right, xenophobic bile".

Top bloke.

But no doubt the right will be delighted if everyone concerned ups sticks, and the quality of the programming suffers as the result.

It will merely reinforce their claims to defund the BBC.
