Anyone cutting down sugar and got any tips for things they've tried and liked? 14:53 - Mar 16 with 3694 views | The_Flashing_Smile | Thinking biscuits and cakes mostly. Baked some decent low/no-added sugar cakes, but if there's any ready-made biscuits out there (or recipes) that are a nice snack/treat, that'd be good too.

Anyone cutting down sugar and got any tips for things they've tried and liked? on 16:51 - Mar 16 by mrfixit426 | No. There can be up to 3g of sugar in a slice of bread. It's naturally occurring in flour but also added to bread dough to accelerate yeast activity. [Post edited 16 Mar 2023 16:52]

Way more than that! Dr David Unwin's sugar infographics show the impact of bread and many other common foods on our blood sugar levels. Lots of other excellent information on the Public Health Collaboration website. Come to our conference in May at the Crucible! Lots of top speakers and heaps of real food. https://phcuk.org/sugar/

Anyone cutting down sugar and got any tips for things they've tried and liked? on 20:03 - Mar 16 by J2BLUE | What are you eating, wonderbread? 2 slices thick wholemeal Hovis - 3.8g 100g dry weight Napolina wholewheat pasta - 3g 100g white flour - less than 0.5g (not suggesting it's healthy) Saying these foods are 'loaded' with sugar is just incorrect. You may be interested in Warburtons no added sugar wholemeal bread. 2.2g per two slices. Personally I think life is too short to worry about 6g sugar in a couple of slices of bread and a serving of pasta. Both wholegrain versions have a decent hit of fibre so the sugar won't be doing any harm. |
Wholemeal is obviously a better option. I did say "up to," and it all adds up over the course of a week. I'm heavily invested into finding out about this at the moment due to health reasons. 4g of sugar is a teaspoon. The OP was asking advice on cutting down. Bread is high in sugar, regardless of how you dismiss it.

Anyone cutting down sugar and got any tips for things they've tried and liked? on 15:25 - Mar 16 by mrfixit426 | Cutting down on bread and pasta does a lot of the heavy lifting. They're both loaded with sugar. I cut both of these out of my diet in January and it's made a massive difference. Other culprits are cereals, crumpets, muesli, fruit juice and some fruits like bananas, mango, pineapple and grapes. It's not just the obvious cakes and biscuits etc. |
No, I know. But I'm doing Michael Mosely's Just One Thing (podcast on BBC) - specifically cutting out obvious sugar (so not going hardcore and cutting out sugar completely).

No. We should all cut down (and ideally remove altogether) sugar. I'm not doing this for weight loss BTW, but to avoid the sugar spikes, sleep better etc. As one of the sciencey types on here I'm surprised to see this reply from you.

Anyone cutting down sugar and got any tips for things they've tried and liked? on 16:58 - Mar 16 by Parsley | I'd try and find an alternative rather than the 'healthy' cake/biscuit option, they're generally a bit disappointing and you'll just be wishing you had a proper cake. Another thing is sometimes when you think you're hungry you're actually just thirsty so have a drink of water/cup of tea and see if you still want to eat something half an hour later |
I said in the OP I've baked some decent low/no-added sugar cakes, so it certainly is possible not to be disappointing and wishing for a proper cake.

J2's right actually, sugar if combined with fibre's ok as the fibre breaks the sugar down. Which is why the sugar in fruit is ok (if you eat the skins as well).

It's possible to get 95% and even 100% cocoa. I like it, and have had a square every so often when on a diet. I think the one I bought was Montezuma. Even the very dark, high cocoa bars at 70+%, even at 85%, have a lot of sugar in relative to most things that you eat. I get that you are doing what you are doing, and why, but for somebody else who was trying to lose weight I would say cutting cakes and biscuits out altogether is easier than trying to go with a pale imitation. Oats are generally your friend, though. Nairn's mentioned above, are available in most supermarkets and also in Home Bargains and similar, sometimes. I like them! My off the wall tip for your situation would be to substitute in a small piece of really good cheese when you would normally have a biscuit. Whatever your preference. A good Mature cheddar, ripe Brie or Camembert, or Gorgonzola or Stilton, all work for me. With or without the oatcake. You will get a big flavour hit, and with the Blue Cheeses some gut health benefits too.

We have different definitions of high in sugar. I don't think you should be saying foods are 'loaded' with sugar when they clearly aren't. Each to their own. If you want to cut out virtually all sugar then good luck to you but I would consider what you are giving up when you cut out virtually all sugar. Two slices of wholemeal bread might have 2-4g sugar but it also has 5-7g fibre and lots of other nutrients. The fibre slows digestion, as does adding fat so if you had a cheese sandwich those minuscule amounts of sugar would be burnt for energy very quickly. Good luck with your health and please do keep us updated if you wish to as it would be interesting to hear your results.

Anyone cutting down sugar and got any tips for things they've tried and liked? on 13:21 - Mar 17 with 646 views | DinDjarin | If u want to eliminate sugar then you also need to cut back on starchy foods as these turn to sugar once in the body. Sugar is sugar to the body regardless where it comes from. Some odd advice on here tbh. Being diabetic I have a decent knowledge of what constitutes sugar as is my enemy. Fruits contain fructose which to the body is just sugar. Most berries are fine though in moderation. Starchy foods, bread, pasta, potatoes etc again pure sugar to your body. Margarine, not sugar but why anyone puts that anywhere near their body I have no idea. Artificial sweeteners, poison. I'm basically on a mild keto diet and in 3 months have lost 2 stone, reduced my daily glucose checks to a safe range (under 5.7) and my blood pressure is also bang on where it should be. No exercise just a diet of eggs, pate, meats, olives, lots of green veg, fish, avocados, nuts (pine & walnuts), peanut butter, cheese (lots of), mayonnaise with everything etc. Also lots of radishes to snack on which I didnt realise how good for you they were. Bin off beer although I found a beer called Skinny Beer that does not spike sugars. Tastes OK as a make do. Lots of gin / rum & dry white wine. 4 pints of water a day and decent sleep. I feel like a new person but need to keep this up now forever but its not as hard as I thought it would be to kick the sugar / carbs into touch. Edit - Also I fry with loads of butter and have garlic with everything. [Post edited 17 Mar 2023 13:40]

Anyone cutting down sugar and got any tips for things they've tried and liked? on 13:43 - Mar 17 with 630 views | Darth_Koont | Coming at it from a different angle, you could try intermittent fasting. Cuts down on sugar throughout the day but you can still “binge” on everything you like. On top of the extra energy you get when you’re not constantly processing food, you start feeling the effect of cheap calories and how knackered you get by those blood sugar spikes. So you tend to enjoy the effect from better foods and a better diet so “binges” are now cravings for fruit, vegetables, nuts etc with the occasional cheap sugar treat for the rush. By the way, intermittent fasting is not really another weight-loss method – certainly I didn’t feel the need for that. Better to see it as boosting your overall energy, immunology and gut health, which then makes an active, healthy lifestyle much, much easier. But I have got absolutely ripped too without really any extra effort or training.

Starchy foods, bread, pasta, potatoes etc again pure sugar to your body. I know it all gets broken down to glucose but this seems a bit of a low carb scare tactic. If you haven't seen anything about them before, google the blue zones. All high carb. IIRC one of them eats something like 70% sweet potatoes. Most of the world eats a heavy starch based diet and are perfectly healthy.

Haha! No. Probably a couple of thousand Hibbies called Craig around Edinburgh. 😀 Anyway, I’m from just off Easter Road so I only really knew the Leith locals back in the day. A couple of Craigs there but I can’t imagine either getting to 2023 let alone Uruguay in 2023. How was it? Looks worth a visit (in the tyre tracks of Che Guevara’s La Ponderosa*) but Chile and Argentina would probably be first. *If you haven’t read it, Guevara’s Motorcycle Diaries would make good reading, especially the first bit. It’s a great book otherwise.

I would disagree. Most of the world is riddled with obesity and disease more than at any point in history even though we think we lead healthy lifestyles, eat low fat, eat loads of fruits exercise more etc.

Haven't read the book but I have seen the film. I wandered over and started up a conversation with Craig because he was sitting at the same cafe and wearing a Scotland football shirt with an Argentina 1978 World Cup logo...and a red lion rather than a saltire as the crest.
