"The Democrats are coming for your guns" is basically a standard MAGA attack line. It's not true of course, but there is a semblance of something underneath it.

There is a very sensible policy that is again going through the house to ban assault rifles (of which the AR-15 is one). It of course will struggle to get passed.

No member of the public needs an assault rifle. There is no use-case where a standard, run of the mill household needs one. It's not designed to protect, it's designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. Which is why these shooters use them.

The US has a mental health and opioid problem not a gun problem. Plenty of other countries have citizens with guns and hardly any comparable shootings.

Another rightie lie

Name me a country where gun ownership is anywhere near that of the US

The US doesn't have a gun problem Chico? Not even a little tiny one?

Mass shootings of this type are a modern phenomenon. Many other countries have citizens with access to guns, and there are hardly any shootings of this type outside of the US. The problem is with the sick population (including use of illegal and legal drugs) not the fact they have guns.

It has 390 million guns (2018 estimate). 'Tiny' as you say...

Gun deaths account for 79% of all homicides in the USA.

For comparison, Canada is 37% and UK is 4%.

That's hell of a lot of opioids or mental health issues, but as usual Chico is desperate for the edgy take. Which actually isn't edgy at all. It's the actual MAGA take on it all.

More lies

It is righties who believe in people being allowed to possess the means for mass killings

There are other countries with similar drug misuse, but not the same level of gun killings

Gun ownership per 100 people

US - 120.5
Serbia - 39.1
Canada - 37.4

School killings

Canada 2022 - 4 attacks 10 dead
US 2023 (3 months)
15 attacks 17 dead

Once again dare I say nothing has changed at all since when I watched Bowling for Columbine all those years ago.

https://g.co/kgs/VoNMMY

What hit home for me back then, was the contrast between the USA and Canada in terms of gun homicides that Michael Moore discussed during the film.

Still very relevant today IMHO, as no one in politics has seen to take on the NRA over this issue.

Given that other countries with citizens who have guns don’t suffer from anything like the specific problem the US has, surely it makes sense to consider other reasons other than hurr durr stupid Yanks have loads of guns.
It surprised me so many purportedly left wing TWTDers are jumping to deflect attention from the enormous pharma complex that has so many Americans hooked on drugs, not that I’m saying that’s what you’re doing.

I'm not sure anybody has suggested hur dur stupid Yanks with lots of guns, what gets questioned is the culture that surrounds those guns and how you address that. A culture I suspect many other places with guns don't share.

You seem to be the only one coming to the conclusion that lots of guns plus stupid Yanks equals shootings, at least on behalf of other people.

Can you provide some decent evidence that there is a causal relationship between mass shootings (school shootings in particular) and the use of legal opioids? At the minute you seem to be conflating two social problems in the US and suggesting they are related but you've offered no evidence to support that point. It's possible to be against gun violence and the peddling of addictive opioids by big pharma without feeling the need to posit that one is causing the other.

Some of the gun deaths are because shooting yourself is an efficient way of committing suicide, but yes, the idea that someone with mental health issues can legally own 7 guns, including a semi automatic assault rifle, is beyond off the scale stupid. We can now re-run the candlelit prayer vigils, the had wringing & the usual guff from the NRA buffoons about how owning guns is a constitutional right & that gun laws will take guns away from the law abiding citizens but not the criminals.
40% of Americans live in a household where someone owns a gun. Only around half of Americans support increased gun controls so there is next to no possibility of this happening, whether the President is Biden, Trump or someone else.

Not sure anyone is saying stupid Yanks have loads of guns (though have only skimmed through the thread quickly..)
Your right to consider the other possible reasons for this very American problem. I imagine in reality its a quite complex and probably down to a combination of issues such as possibly gun culture, poverty, mental health etc and quite possibly the opioid problem in the US may play a part. (Im no expert on this)The problem for me is you have already decided that the reason for it is Americas serious problem with opioid use. For this to be the only and main cause for these shocking incidents I think you would need to show evidence that all or at least the majority of these incidents were carried out by people with issues with prescribed opiates

I don't think anyone is issued with drug problems in the US. And the complete lack of drug misuse being given for ANY mass shootings demonstrates that our sad little righty is scrabbling around to defend an indefensible culture through lies

Some while back a distant relative, who was a gamekeeper had his guns confiscated. His wife had left him and he was behaving 'rather erratically'. Nothing unusual, but a threat when you have 3 shotguns. The police turned up not many days after to confiscate them. His behaviour continued to be unstable and he eventually lost the job.

This was for a shotgun Not a farken sub machine gun. Seven !

How on earth can any hillbilly justify owning seven sub machine guns ?

Tennessee has no laws that allow police to seize guns from violent suspects.

For the sake of discussion let's make the assumption that it is psychotropic drugs which are responsible for the increase in the number of mass shootings in the US.

It remains the case, does it not, that the number of people killed at each such incident is greater due to the availability of assault rifles to the perpetrators?

So what approach does one take? Reduce the number of incidents by tackling "big pharma" or reduce the number of deaths per incident by tackling the gun lobby or do both in parallel?

What seems clear is that doing nothing is not an option.

It seems to me that investigating a causal link between psychotropic drug use and mass shootings to arrive at conclusive proof may take many years and so, for that duration, is tantamount to the "do nothing" option and is therefore unacceptable.
