I was checking out the Derby highlights on YouTube and came across this recent upload. Good picture quality and some nice football on show.
Cracking strike for the disallowed Bruges goal. And lovely work from Whymark for our third. Who was the number 14 that put it away? Shame about the result in the return leg - I think that's our heaviest defeat in Europe (0-4). Also, that was a great save from their 'keeper to prevent it from becoming 4-0.
Was anybody on here at this match? It was a good few years before I was born.

I was there but to be honest can't really remember the game or the goals.
One thing I had forgotten is that Eric Gates had broken into the team so early, because I don't think he became established in the first team until after the 1978 Cup Final win.

Terry Austin got the third.....coincidentally, John Peddelty scored the second, and they were the two players who formed part of the deal which brought Paul Mariner to Portman Road a year later.

Yes. Also went to the away leg - where we lost 4 - 0 😟
Like you I went home and away. I seem to remember a 3 car convoy setting off from the Smock pub Maidenhall estate, and a month before my 21st birthday. I guess we arrived in Zeebrugge port but can't recall how far the stadium was

I was at both legs , the away leg was a great day , got the TT ferry from Felixstowe early and spent most of the day in Brugge getting rat ar$ed as you do when 19 , unfortunately the end result actually bought tears to my eyes as I thought we would never concede 4 without reply . Those really were the days …….. COYBs

It’s about 8/ 10 miles I believe, got the train into Brugge .

Thanks a lot for putting this up. I was at the game but don't think I ever saw the highlights - got back home too late I guess. Certainly Bruges threatened more to score than I recall, but I still can't believe how we were thrashed in the return, going 3-0 down by half time. Crowd was over 28,000 & a great atmosphere as i recall.

Thanks for confirming the distance. I guess the ship docked early in the morning as I can remember all day on the beers in the city. Also our group of 12 managed to get in the deserted stadium around mid day for a 'photo shoot'. I'm sure I still have a couple of pictures of the gang fooling around with a large union jack.

Did you head to the fanfare in the City , just as we arrived we were greeted a large group of Town fans that had just arrived making their way towards us the air filled with chants of Ipswich Ipswich .

Thanks for posting. I was there too and cannot remember much of the match apart from that Belgian trumpet blasting away for much of the match!
We made a nasty habit in the 70's of winning the first leg by three or four goals and still losing the overall tie. If memory serves me right we also lost to FC Twente & Barcelona that way.

I went to the away leg, as a 7 year old little scamp! Must have been the first time I’d ever left the UK. Seem to remember it being drunk fuelled carnage at points. The lads at the rear of our coach were drinking all the way there and back and left the coach in a right mess. I remember the coach driver shaking his head looking at the mess once they were off and calling them “animals”! I also remember fans jumping off moving coaches and running around with town flags and scarves, then trying to get on other coaches that weren’t theirs.

I was another one who went to both legs - was not expecting to lose 4-0! I went with a friend from school (Stowmarket) - we had a flag and Micky had 3 sections of a chimney sweeps brush down his trouser leg. We got into the ground but as soon as we put the poles together and attached the flag, the police confiscated it! Happy days

I went to both legs. Was a teenager then and I got very travel sick on the ferry! I can't remember much about the game other than Ipswich fans were in a large open section. Unfortunately they had seated us under a Bruges fans section and we were pelted with glass beer bottles during the game!

Haha! Most away trips were like that! Unless I remember wrongly i think there were 6000 of us went to either Feyenord or Bruges.
I'm fairly sure away games in the league were equally 'reckless'

Yes. - there was also an astonishing miss from Raoul Lambert? Who contrived to hit the woodwork instead of the back of net when presented with an open goal at the Churchman’s end. It was a feature of Town’s UEFA cup campaigns that they usually tended to go out after what seemed easy home legs - leasing to a surprise exit in an era when many didn’t travel abroad At least this exit was one that didn’t go to penalties or away goals

I venture into Brugge several times a year. The locals still talk about that game. I believe it's in their top five games of all time.
My mate went to the away leg and I lent him my Town scarf that I had from the 61-62 season. Bastard got so pissed he came home without it. Didn't even realise until I asked him for it.

Did European sides bring many away fans to PR? Did we take many away?
Funnily enough, the Eastern European clubs didn't bring any, as most of them wouldn't have used the return half of their tickets. I remember Bruges bringing a good few, but European travel was expensive & difficult before the advent of cheap flights. Yes, Ipswich to the Low Countries would have been one of the few practical journeys to undertake by ferry.
