Could be right - Lampard doesn't suffer from a lack of an ego.

The dude should have cut his teeth as an assistant manager with a good head coach or in L1 or L2. But instead? Derby County and then Chelsea with no real signs of success other than meeting a couple of expectations at Chelsea.

So I got mistaken for BR once. He was rumoured to be taking the Nigerian managers job, I think he even traveled to Nigeria for an interview, but turned them down as he wanted his contract paid up front. Anyhow - he was around, and I just happened to be traveling from Lagos to Jo'berg for a business meeting. I had a Nigerian FA polo shirt which I was wearing on the plane, something I often did as it made life with the Nigerian customs officials easier if they knew you weren't "Fresh fish" (as new visitors are labelled) At the airport, I seemed to be attracting a fair bit of attention - I should say more than usual being a good looking bloke n all. Turned out the pointing and whispering was because word had wrongly got out BR was in the airport after his interview...

Until a year ago I couldn’t work out how good he was. At Derby, he was average, then he performed above expectations his first season at Chelsea and underachiever in his second. He was a disaster at Everton though. For a manager like him with no achievements, he should’ve gone to a top end championship club instead and backed himself to get a promotion.

Nah. He's very famous. There will always be chairmen stupid enough to empty incompetent 'legends' to manger their teams. Look ho along Famous Roy kept getting job offers for.

Bryan Robson won promotion at Middlesbrough, a lot more than Frank has done. Also he assisted Venables at Euro 96

His assistant was key though as I heard from a former M'boro player that it was virtually impossible for a player to get an audience with the great man himself. Everything was done via the no. 2.

Agreed - he did fine at Derby and probably should have stayed there rather than accept the Chelsea job when that came calling the first time round. In fairness, he did well in the first season there when finances were tight and he had to work with what he had. Second season saw a wobble basically over a month which saw him leave - had only lost one game outright and one on penalties up to 11th December, then oversaw five defeats in eight. He’s never really recovered from that run. Everton is a basket case and even Dyche is struggling to get anything to click there. And Chelsea isn’t much better; the squad is hideously unbalanced, he’s the third manager this season who can’t get it to work. ETA - Second, Tuchel’s record wasn’t hideous before he was sacked. Stupid decision right there. His loyalty to Chelsea was needed by the club, but has killed his managerial career at the same time. [Post edited 20 Apr 2023 10:31]
