Have any of our previous promotions actually been achieved at Portman Road?
Obviously 2000 was at Wembley and 1992 at Oxford, but where did we finally clinch promotion in 1968, 1961, 1957 and 1954?

I seem to remember my mum, who was a season ticket holder in the 50s and 60s, talking about a massive game at Portman Road towards the end of the 1967/68 season against QPR, which ended 2-2, but I don't think that was a promotion clincher.....anyone at that game? | | | |

I think Town and Torquay both won their last games, both leap-frogging Colchester and finishing on the same points, but with Town having a better goal average. Whether Torquay played later and Town had to wait for Torquay's goal-average to fall short, I don't know. [Post edited 26 Apr 2023 11:31]

I was 9 years old and lived in Ipswich. I don’t recall any real celebrations, unlike when we won the First Division which involved an open bus through the Town centre and a balcony appearance on Cornhill. | | | |

That was my first ever Portman road game as a young lad. Ian Marshall scored for them from memory and they won 2-1. | |

Promotion from the old 2nd Division in 1961 was secured with a 4-0 win over Sunderland at PR. Promotion in 1968 was secured with a 2-1 win over Pompey at Fratton Park. I was lucky enough to be at both games. |  |

I was there in 1968 - don't remember whether promotion was achieved at or before the last Portman Road game, but the fact that Cliff Richard's "Congratulations" was played as we invaded the pitch (bad behaviour, thoroughly disapprove you understand) is engraved on my memory! No, I was asking someone about this the other day and it was confirmed at Portsmouth the previous week. Just checked the maths and our goal average was such that we couldn't be caught barring mad results the final week.

Ipswich had a midweek match prior to the Portsmouth game which was Crystal Palace away, our game in hand. We got out of schoool early as a friend's dad was driving us down. Score in the first couple of minutes and three up after about half an hour, John O'Rourke and Ray Crawford with the goals if I recall correctly ( it was 55 years ago! ). Ended 3 - 1 and we were two points clear.
The next day I believe that my mum and dad told me the scores were being flashed up on the tv screen, presumably Anglia ITV, which was a rarity at the time. | | | |

A great memory to have. Always feel that that season and promotion is forgotten a little because of what came next. But always sounded like a great season and team to have followed, some great characters by the sounds of things. | | | |
