Ashton/New stand 07:19 - May 3 with 11716 viewsEssexBloo

I might be reading too much into it but does anyone else find it strange that MA mentions this in every single interview now, unprompted last night as well. Is he trying to put pressure on owners to make that investment or pressure on council to allow it perhaps?

Wonder if they would consider using the Staples area for a shop etc and then that would allow them to infill the corner where the shop is now with seats?

That would seem a pretty good interim step.

The West stand that replaced the Chicken Run was put up in a summer and ready in time for the new season. However the ends to the stand were added 74/75, but didn’t affect the capacity at the time.

I doubt it’s possible in the 21st century. Both the North Stands and Churchmans took about a season

You have surely got East and West mixed up.

Agree. £20m is a very different number though!

Yeah that last bit was in response to another poster suggesting it would only cost 10-20m. That barely buys you a full tank of diesel these days.

I think we should avoid rushing into building new stands. Doing it prematurely is what hit the club hard last time!!!

In fairness Fulham’s new Riverside stand is up to £120m now and is only 8,600 capacity, although appreciate they faced different challenges.

If the current Cobbold stand holds 7,000, you would expect a replacement to hold at least 9-10,000 with a wide range of other commercial facilities to generate revenue. So whilst it may not reach £100m, I would be very surprised if they were to manage to replace it for anything near £20m.

The new AFC Wimbledon main stand cost circa £30m. This is before the recent spike in labour costs and raw materials (so around £40m?). You would expect the Cobbold replacement to be substantially bigger than the AFCW stand.

The cost of the stands certainly contributed to going into administration!!

That's definitely an interesting idea, particularly given that it'll be hard to fill the opposite corner due to the new big screen etc.

The North is much wider than the pitch there is no corner to fill in. Also those blue things in the corner support the roof and the upper tier.

The roof is supported by the truss on top. I might be wrong but I doubt the blue buildindmgs at each end form part of the structural supports for the stand itself.

We should see plans for a new stand and the surrounding areas over the summer. He keeps mentioning it for the fans benefit, he is socialising the idea. There is going to be some upheaval. Fans in the Cobbold now may miss some games and fans in the lower Sir Alf will have to accept they will be moved into the new Cobbold to relocate the away fans.

If the capacity is increased, would the lower tier of Sir Alf be enough to meet the minimum percentage requirement for away fans? I am also not sure that placing them at pitch level directly behind the goal is ideal.

I do hope they keep the current lettering across the top of any new stand. A link back to Bobby, my childhood, it's seen all those great days, the ups, downs and current upturn. Like Spurs keeping their cockerel from the old ground or Arsenals clock.

There is no minimum % when you are carrying out redevelopment longer term when any new stand is finished I expect that away fans will stretch into the upper tier.

The new anfield road stand cost Liverpool £80m and increased the capacity by 7,000 seats.
I think we would certainly be in that kind of ballpark for a Cobbold stand replacement.
