The old East Suffolk and West Suffolk counties? 17:58 - May 8 with 4039 views | thatbdude | I just learnt about how Suffolk was divided into 2 counties from 1889 to 1974. What was it like back then for those who remember it and what was reuniting like

The argument mainly being that the two haven ports should be under the same county council.

yep, they wanted estuaries unde the control of a single authority, resulting in the creation of Cleveland and Humberside. In the case of Suffolk, it was initially proposed that it would lose parts of East Lothingland (Gorleston, Bradwell et al) South of Great Yarmouth and would gain the parts of Essex you mentioned. The denizens of Essex weren't happy and retained their proposed losses, so Suffolk lost parts of it's Northern nether regions to Norfolk and gained nothing. The loss of East Lothingland is a causus beli that remains vexatious and could eventually lead to WAR!

That was the Redclieff-Maud proposal, which was Labour planned to implement, but was cancelled after the Tories won the 1970 general elections https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redcliffe-Maud_Report Also in reference to the OP, Suffolk was actually divided into three until 1974; East Suffolk, West Suffolk and Ipswich County Borough.

But it did lead to no-go areas in border towns like Stowmarket, where there was a mix of people. It wasn't quite like the Bogside, but not far off, and there was talk at one time of building a wall, like in Belfast, between the different communities. [Post edited 9 May 2023 15:19]

He used to tell us that his gang would march toward Diss in the 60s with his ghetto blaster cranking out the sickest Jungleist beats when they fancied a scrap with the Bungay Boyz. Sadly when the 70s hit they had to retreat to Haverhill where they planned to seek asylum in Cambridge. Needless to say when Happy Hardcore came about in 76' the entire of East Anglia were too messed up on disco biscuits to settle their boredom with a fight anymore. Sad how modern days have really mutilated the simple pleasures of a golden generation. [Post edited 9 May 2023 9:02]

Geldoff was in it up to his nose though, and only trying to fend off investigations into his cornering of the radish market in '73. Had he not dropped the F Bomb it would have all been brushed under the carpet.

It's hard to know Geldoffs full involvement or to what degree he was guilty of manipulating the radish market. Midge Ure and Paul Young on the other hand were clearly up to their necks in it

There is a lot of wonderful poetry from this period.

Both much shorter men, of course, on account of Ure not even being quite a midget and Paul being very young (at the time).
