And people wonder why Wrexham FC are despised... (n/t) on 11:18 - May 23 by fezbob | I'm very chilled. Singing GSTK makes you slightly subservient, I'd argue. I've always thought Jerusalem would make a better English national anthem anyway. As for the latter part, since when was football civilised? |

And people wonder why Wrexham FC are despised... (n/t) on 11:17 - May 23 by Churchman | I don’t have any problem with Wales or the Welsh people. I worked in Cardiff for a few months and enjoyed it. Snowdonia is beautiful. Newport is a hole but the taxi driver taking me to Celtic Manor on my first visit told me that when picking me up from the station! He was right. Not been to Wrexham, but I have seen them play at least once (against Grimsby about 10 years ago at Wembley) and since our football teams have only crossed paths once, I believe, there’s nothing to despise from my perspective. As for their upturn in fortunes, I don’t know the details of the story, but good luck to them. The Ed Sheeran comments by this bloke? if ever there was a lesson in do your research before opening the mouth, that was it. Thick footballer syndrome. Edit: and no, apart from my two cats, I’m not subservient to anybody including King C and co. [Post edited 23 May 2023 11:23]

I've seen Wrexham play once. When they got spanked 1-0 by the mighty Bromley at Wembley last year. Wrexham were proper sh*te. The Wrexham mob had the boxes filled out with superstars including Beckham. Gutted. Brommmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And people wonder why Wrexham FC are despised... (n/t) on 11:17 - May 23 by braveblue | Why despise them? Great story. Netflix series very good. Overcame real disappointment last season. Good owners and great spirit in the town. I’m all for them. |
What is the great story here? The biggest team in the conference getting promoted after spending a relative shedload of money for that level? All whilst masquerading as some kind of underdog miracle in the media, to the point that it's almost tantamount to a pack of lies. And I don't know what this Wrexham visitor is on if he thinks the Owners have no control / are not propagating this image within the media. All whilst the real overachievers, deserving of coverage are probably being ignored in the press.

And people wonder why Wrexham FC are despised... (n/t) on 11:16 - May 23 by fezbob | Palmer isn't a stranger to outlandish comments. I think he recently said he'd back himself to get 20 goals a season in Man City's team (he wouldn't). My point is that somehow taking his views as being representative of the whole club is just daft. No-one thinks we're bigger than Ipswich - we've just spent 15 years in non-league for Christ's sake. As for the Disney deal, I'm not sure what you're getting at? The documentary is the main vehicle for attracting extra investment into the club. |
I wasn’t insinuating it’s a widely held view, just the person in the clip. Re. The Disney deal and the many other media appearances etc. I’m just saying the media coverage is hardly out of their control, it’s exactly what they’re trying to do and want. For what it’s worth, I truly don’t care about it, just wanted to acknowledge they’re clearly angling for as much media attention as they can get, which is clearly working and good for Wrexham.

And people wonder why Wrexham FC are despised... (n/t) on 11:20 - May 23 by Marshalls_Mullet | If anything has been blown out of proportion this season, its the level of fanfare that promotion from the National League has attracted. Its not such a big deal. Ryan and the other guy HAVE to be active, prominent owners, otherwise the TV show doesn't work. |
To be fair, they may well be very enthusiastic about the Wrexham project. After all, they're only trying to do similar to our own Three Lions, albeit starting from a lower level and with less initial expenditure (and less known background in soccer/football). Buy an undervalued club, raise its profile and get it up the football ladder. They have a TV show, we have Ed Sheeran wearing the shirt onstage. Both sets of owners have brought the feelgood factor back after a long period in the doldrums. The Welsh club may not have our illustrious history, but they were for a long time an established third-tier outfit. For me, the current Town and Wrexham experiences have much in common.

Did he though? Or was he just attempting a REALLY crap joke and some sad sacks are getting all tetchy about it because our seasons over and we've nothing else to get our knickers in a twist about? This is like other fans taking Bedsheet Rich and The Possee as a barometer for the entirely of the ITFC community from club downwards.

Seen the clip, two silly children ignorantly confirming each other’s’ stupidity, passively watched by a third who didn’t intervene to correct them. Bit ironic that their club’s just been promoted to the ‘professional‘ level - this trio has some catching up to do …

Well two of your players are using a fairly sizeable platform to spread negative misinformation about our club and a sponsor/fan to elevate themselves. A club that has won awards for its community work and said sponsor who has put his hands in his pocket not expecting a return and helped us sell a record number of shirts. So I'm not sure it is an overreaction tbh.

I'm not being critical, and I agree with the parallels. I just disagree with what Palmer said, and think Foster is a bit of a nob. I watched the doc, and was pleased to see them go up. I like the owners too.

You make it sound like a concerted effort by the Wrexham Propaganda Ministry, rather than two footballers talking on a podcast about a subject they appear to know very little about. I know Foster's podcasts get good viewing figures, but I'd be very surprised if it's dented anyone's opinion of Ipswich and/or Ed Sheeran.

And people wonder why Wrexham FC are despised... (n/t) on 10:58 - May 23 by fezbob | Wrexham fan here. It seems to me that Palmer's comments have been blown out of proportion, partly as it involves Wrexham and we're the current clickbait fodder. Was what he said about Ed Sheeran's involvement at Ipswich ill-informed and inaccurate? Yes (I'm not sure he's the sharpest). Were his comments malicious? I don't think so, it was just a passing remark about Rob and Ryan's level of involvement at Wrexham. As usual though, it's easy to take a clip from a podcast, detach it from its original context and spark a bit of outrage. To the people saying they hate everything about Wrexham, what is it in particular that you object to? Is it two blokes who have done well for themselves investing in a non-league club and turning the team from perennial underachievers into a success story and doing positive things for the community along the way? If it's the "media circus", I hardly see how they're to blame for that. That's outside their control. As for hating the English, my parents and the majority of my family are English so that would be quite the identity crisis. We do boo God Save The Queen/King though a) as it seems to annoy our rivals and b) being subservient to a bloke with a gold hat is a bit weird in 2023. |
It's all as you say blown out of proportion. Re GSTK or queen as it still was when it was booed at last seasons trophy final, did make my mind up as a neutral there on the day who to support.

You said, "If it's the "media circus", I hardly see how they're to blame for that. That's outside their control." Two Hollywood stars buy a non league club, sign a deal with Disney and make a documentary about it, whilst promoting themselves all over social media, inviting celeb guests along etc. I've nothing against Wrexham per se, and enjoyed the documentary, but how on earth do you square that they're not to blame for the media circus and it's all out of their control? Making and promoting a documentary is literally being IN control of a media circus.

What have I stated that is factually incorrect there? Maybe those two could learn a thing or two! Whilst I agree that it'll have minimal impact on Ipswich and people's opinions. It's certainly not winning you any friends here, which was the initial topic of discussion in the OP.

I'm talking more about the clickbait crap that the nationals are coming out with. They don't control the narrative that the media portrays. For instance, we all know we're no longer "underdogs".

In a nutshell, a Wrexham player made up something (or genuinely believed in what he was saying) about our sponsor. Let’s face it, the tabloids football pages do a lot worse or make up more outlandish ‘stories’ with most clubs. I’m sure most Wrexham fans couldn’t care about us and we think the same about them. As for most Wrexham fans hating the English - complete rubbish. Welsh football fans probably get as much grieve about their nationality from English clubs. Apparently it’s all banter.
