Putting in an asparagus bed was definitely the most cost efficient use of space ever and my piss has never smelt so bad for so long. Broad beans, if you haven’t grown your own you've never tasted a good one....just started eating them. This years novelty grow is a loofah plant...anybody grown one before and got to scratch their back with it? Epic fail this year was purple sprouting as last year was too dry for them to get established enough to survive Winter.
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."
My lettuces are growing like wildfire (on the stuff you, I think, recommended from Crowfield, cheers). Outside cucumber going well, but greenhouse one not so much. Toms, so-so. Chillis and peppers a little slow. Beetroot, marvellous, isn't it, wasn't it, jumpers for goalposts. Rhubarb, magnificent. Runners, all anti-clockwisely engaged. Fairly boring stuff really, but it keeps me alive.
1x bed of peas 1x bed of sugarsnap 1x bed of broad beans
Rainbow selection carrots (not sure they'll take)
Coriander, basil and parsley to bulk out the herbs a bit.
Okra, looking like this was a bad idea.
Raspberries, potatoes in clumps around the border.
Got a load of "blue" veg to go in for the winter to try and get the kids interested. There's kohlrabi, caulis, chard and some other stuff in the packets.
Would love to be a year round gardener but I don't have the time and expertise to ever really do much more than waste money and grow the world's most expensive crops of peas etc.
Having moved house, and with a tonne of indoors jobs to do, my veg gardening is a bit limited this year.
I have managed to build a couple of raised beds for a salad/kitchen garden though, and stuff in there is doing well. Already eating some nice gem lettuce plus chard. Lots of other salad type veg is doing very well too. Could do with a bit a rain soon though!
The main veg patch is going to be an autumn project, to get ready for next year. If anyone has a sod cutter I can borrow that would be grand.
Oh, I've bought and built a greenhouse too. Relying on bought pepper/chilli/tomato seedlings is proving a bit hit and miss.

I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Sounds like your runners are doing well, only planted ours at the weekend and they are yet to engage with the poles. We have taken to cutting the bottom of pots out for our greenhouse cucumbers and keeping them above the soil level to reduce the risk of neck rot and it seems to work...the first two are well on their way. Our peppers are also very slow to get going. Sweetcorn will be going in at the weekend. Beetroot is indeed food of the gods, especially grated in a salad.

Different crop to you but Rocket, lettuce, lemons and lemongrass all good Loads of oranges but small due to water shortages Almonds, apples, apricots serious lack of water so almost non existent Mangos don't look good either, even the local farmers are strugglingl Looking promising that we get our first dragon fruit this year though

Hurriedly planted forty or so seed potato before I set off on some travels less than a month ago, got back last week and they were showing as neat rows of healthy plants. Going to have to bank them up soon, Banksy...
However, tomato and lettuce have not survived the sunshine and heat despite being placed outside. Rhubarb is going OK, already had one crumble this year. Blackcurrant berries showing, which always seems like an achievement at my northerly latitude, strawberry plant flowering but raspberry canes looking behind time despite their tiresome profusion.

Junior still prefers most of her veg raw as a result of grazing from our garden. I used to do a primary skool gardening club and peas always went down well as did digging up new potatoes and getting to eat flowers such as borage, nasturtiums and calendula.

We have quite few flowers dotted about and we've made the front garden all native species of wildflowers, but not gone for edible ones yet. The bees blooming love it though.
Eldest always scoffs the redcurrants and things like that off the bushes but he's not gone for much else.

Corr....lucky you. One of my workplaces has an orangery....the smell of lemon and orange blossom is intoxicating. Still no rain then, it looked like you might be getting some?

A bit slow to get growing this year Carol, but the warmer weather is most welcome and starting to look good now in my modest plot. Courgettes finally getting a head of steam. Tomatoes outside doing nicely. Runner beans late going in but hopefully better than last years disaster. B-road beans in a couple of weeks I think. Carrots poking through as are the radishes and beetroot. First pick of strawberries this weekend gone.
I’m not setting any asparagus as I can pick pretty much what I need from a couple of gardens I tend.
We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub.

My second year having a polytunnel for the pub. Big success inside for mixed leaf (Suffolk Punch mix) cucumbers are ridiculous - had four already but last couple of days the plants have gone crazy. Radish have been great. Tomatoes (although the plants are 4/5 ft now - they don’t seem happy), aubergines, peppers all struggling a bit.
Outside Tenderstem broccoli started off well inside, just been shredded by snails I think, fig tree doing well, strawberries just getting there before the birds - loads right now. Asparagus first year and failed a bit, need to maybe put them in raised bed? Rhubarb good. Beans going up the poles, courgette - leaves a bit yellow, will report back. Herbs - mint, sage, oregano , marjoram, rosemary and thyme all thriving. Beetroot looking very healthy. Jerusalem artichoke - returned from last year, hopefully get a bit more water to them and a more successful yield.

Asparagus crowns benefit from good drainage so mounding the soil is a good idea when you plant them. Then just mulch and wait for 3 years!

Broad beans are my favourite, but mine are not ready yet. Also my runner beans are only a few centimetres tall so far. Onions are doing well, but something is eating them. Spotted a couple of accidental pumpkins too, which I'll nurture. My pears have the dreaded midge again so I've chopped all the small fruitlets off in the hope of stopping the little critters' life cycle, but it's a vain hope.

Do you over winter your broad beans? Makes for an early crop and less chance of black fly.

Yes it still feels good picking our own lemons and oranges when we need them Up until last week we've had a month of cloudy /wet weather but as we had nothing between Jan to May its not been enough and we're still screwed! Our local reservoir is at about 12% capacity, in the next few weeks we'll only have running water 3 days a week!

I can't imagine not seeing a hedgehog if I was strimming with a hand held, do you think that the majority of these deaths result from sit on mowers ?
I think it is strimmers as cutting really long grass with your average ride on wouldn't end well. I have done for a grass snake and several field mice nests over the years....it's horrid.

We are definitely behind too this year due to the cold but things are catching up bit by bit.

I got my seedlings from marshall seeds online, much cheaper than £7 a pop, but the problem is that they will have been grown from seed in perfect conditions, then have come to Suffolk to really cold weather, followed by crazy hot weather and a few of them just haven't coped with it.
