England win toss and bowl.

Little margin for error this test.

The right decision give the conditions, we're playing Australia so there is always very little margin for error.

Indeed. But even more so given the result of last one. Felt like a huge missed chance.

Let's be honest, we should be 1-0 up going into this test. Fair play to Cummins in that final innings, but we lost that test through our own mistakes rather than the Aussies winning it. That does mean a win here is essential now really, we're not likely to come back from 2-0 down to win the series, a draw could be possible but would be a big ask. We need to get in the wickets early and then bat big first innings. We've got the players to do it.

It's a cliche, but important toss to win. As others have said, Messers Anderson and Broad under these conditions......

Could be fun

They just asked on TMS if Foakes would have dealt with that as well as Bairstow :-)

Just read on the BBC that in the last 10 tests the team batting first have all scored less than 200, lots of wickets today please!

Hmmm, really isn't going well at the moment. Leaking far too many runs and even when the batsmen are given out then it's (rightly) overturned on review.

Good to see Tongue get wickets but not sure Stokes is bowling anything like properly.

That one was worth reviewing but definitely bat first. 173/2

Not sounding good around Pope either.

Have the rules changed recently? If he can't proceed do we get someone else to bat? or is that only concussion?

Also seems like they misread the pitch (again) not doing what they expected.

I don't think they did misread the pitch, they just haven't bowled very well. Tongue got the ball doing plenty. I reckon the Aussies with a bit more pace would have ripped us apart on this. so the only positive I'm taking is that by the time we go into bat chasing 600, it'll have flattened out a bit....

Losing that first test really was a bad move. All that bravado talk that came after it is just that. Australia are ahead and they are calling the shots. They know that they just have to grind things out, play properly and there's not much we can do.

Can see something like 350-2 at the close. It really isn't good and the lack of spinner is going to be crucial.

TMS saying when pitch is like that it can be sticky too, which gives the batsmen more time.

I didn't see any of this morning but it was so humid in London this morning that bowling was the sensible call. Broad looks well off last week's performance at the moment, presumably Anderson and Robinson were too?

Get another wicket or two fairly soon and we could drag it back a bit:

Really careless stuff, 10 again today so far. At least we slowed the scoring rate from early afternoon, could see Aus being 400/3 or something the way we were going.
