Joe pigott situation 18:34 - Jul 16 with 7089 viewsNutkins_Return

It really does baffle me how there isn't a scramble to sign Joe Pigott. Clearly he will be available for free. It's a fantastic opportunity for a mid table league one team to grab a quality striker at that level. Didn't work for us as we were able to go big in the market and never quite clicked. But he's proven. If he plays consistently he's a massive asset in league one. Presumably he's talking to clubs and will be allowed to leave free - most likely similar to Harper where I imagine we agree a pay off so he isn't out of pocket with the lower wages he'll earn. (No issue with Joe not wanting to lose his wages - he's not come from earning millions and he needs to make as much as he can for the future).

Erm this is the same Piggott who has looked utterly useless wherever he has played - apart from a short spell at Wimbledon. Anyone who saw him play fro Cambridge will still have a painful jaw on hearing the news that the franchise signed him.

No overpaid journeyman is going to give up on fat contract

The bloke isn't happy unless he's arguing.

An interesting character..

RIP Sir Bobby

This.

I'm really not sure why people are getting so defensive about this. Can see why we took a chance with him, but he was poor for us, and struggled at Pompey last season too. Seems like he found a team and system that worked for him at Wimbledon, but outside that there really isn’t much to get excited by.

Of the myriad of Cook signings, he was one of the worst; can only really think of Harper having less of an impact; perhaps Tom Carroll too if I'm being generous.

He'll leave, and I'll forget about him pretty quickly; not really too much more to say on that.

Not sure you know what an argument is if that's what you think.

Which 'franchise'? He went from Cambridge to Maidstone, which I think is where he is from.

A lot of it is about the man himself…..look at Cole Stockton nearly 40 goals over 2 L1 seasons.
But only Burton was prepared to take on.

Of all those signings that summer, you are probably right- maybe Fraser is in there because the expectations for him were even higher.
Our business was really hit and miss, we made some outstanding signings that summer and built the core of our promotion team. But there were about ten other players that we signed who made a pretty limited impact on the team and, if it wasnt for our ownership throwing money behind it, youd question why we didnt keep some of the players we threw out.

Wrong. You have got this completely wrong. He has had more than one good season for Wimbledon in this league.

In Pigott's last season for Wimbledon, 5 of his 20 league goals were penalties & he also failed to convert 2 penalties.

Eh? Short period. Prior to signing for us his previous 4 seasons were 19, 18, 9, 22. Last season he didn't get many starts but their manager wouldn't rule out bringing him back. He's not good enough for us but the post was about him being plenty good enough for a mid L1 side (As he's proven over several seasons).

Absolutely no need for people to come on here calling him useless and c#@p. He clearly isn't. He wasn't the right player profile for how we play and not quite there but he's a decent striker for L1 for sure.

No point applying logic to the elephantbloke’s post. It isn’t about the merits of Pigott, it’s about spewing hatred towards the club. Any opportunity to slip in the meaningless term ‘franchise’ in a derogatory way is gratefully taken.

Pigott? I fully get why we signed him, but as often happens with transfers, it just hasn’t worked out. The sooner he is settled at another L1 club, even if we are subbing his wages this season, the better.

Piggy was a daft signing and it’s equally daft to think an aging journeyman will give up a fat contract to go to yet another club. I suspect I’ve seen him play more often (at Cambridge) than any of the deluded people like you extolling his limited talent - which doesn’t extend to being able to control a football.

I repeat the obvious. Anyone who watched Cambridge had a very sore jaw when the franchise signed him.

Not quite true. Bristol Rovers and Charlton offered Cole a better deal than Burton, but the player wanted to stay nearer to home.

Much to the disappointment of his agent.

14 of Pigott's 19 goals in 2017-18 were in the National League, the 5th tier. From 2017-20, Pigott scored 27 League 1 goals in 86 games, less than one in every 3 games. He then had a good 2020-21 season, although 5 of his 20 league goals were penalties. My bigger issue with Pigott is his style of play. He doesn't do anything particularly well - not great in the air, not quick & not tricky. An average League 1 striker for whom it didn't happen at Town, as sometimes happens with strikers. He also struggled to get into the Pompey team last season. I don't see hi m making any impact on the Championship so the only thing to do is cut our losses, give him a pay off & let him find another club.

I may be deluded, but it’s a better place to be than the sour, bitter, miserable, negative space you seem to inhabit. You clearly hate Ipswich Town and if you have ever attended games I pity anyone that sits next to you.

For the record, I didn’t comment either way on Pigott’s virtues. But regardless of your ‘expert knowledge’, his record at L1 level speaks for itself and hopefully he will find a club that suits him and visa versa.
