Childcare costs 15:50 - Aug 2 with 1734 viewsCotty

So my youngest is in a nursery 4 days a week. He turned 3 in May, so is eligible for the 30 free hours a week from September. Pop quiz - how much are our fees going down (%age wise) from September, given that 3/4 of the days will be supposedly covered by government funding?

It usually does barely anything, as the nursery will then start charging for meals individually etc, and often they are in AM/PM sessions, so you have to use hours for time when they aren't even there.

It should all be nationalised.

Properly funding childcare for all would in my eyes be the biggest investment you could make into the economy. It's also coincidentally the right thing to do. Childcare is currently unobtainable for the vast majority.

We made that mistake thinking it would be completely free, then we found out the hard way!

The free hours cover about 70% from memory? (Which to be fair was still bloody great). But given you still have to pay 1 full day is it about 47.5%.

What I can't remember is if that factors in the fact that you still pay 100% during school holidays!!

I've no problem paying toward childcare (my choice to have kids) but it should all just be heavily subsidized because as you say it would have benefits for the economy as well and society more generally as kids are necessary!!!

I have 4 year old and a 1 year old. 1 year old goes to child minder 3 days a week and 4 year old 2 days a week.
Just got the bill for August and it’s £750!! And that’s after the funding

Judging on what I paid, with wrap around care I'll go with a 56% drop.

Mine went from £62 to £27 a day

EDIT - This was when only doing 2 days a week in nursey so all of this was 'free' childcare, doing 4 days you'd go over limit so I'd guess equivalent of mine would be £62 to £40ish so a 33% saving

I would hope Factors isn't involved, to be honest, otherwise he'll instil in the youngsters a dislike of cyclists, a love of local recycling centres and the Lavenham Guildhall, so it depends which of those are positives and which are otherwise..

The biggest investment in child development and socialisation you could make is to enable a parent to parent for the majority of work hours during the first 5 years.

Just been through similar myself and have found pro rata accross the year three days a week all year round is a sweet spot. Seen my bill drop from £700 ish a month to about £180

Very much depends on where your nursery is.

It might cover 30 hours in a council estate in Stockton on Tees. It does not cover anywhere near that amount in Cambridge.

Really should be renamed.

Have you played about with the figures? Because of mine and my wife's odd working patterns, our boy alternates beyween 3 amd 4 days a week. By spreading the government payments over the full year, we'll only pay for about one day a fortnight (possibly a bit more), and overall it will cost us less than taking the larger term-time only support.

How does that work? Thought it was only food you pay for (and out of term time costs).

Too much. There are much better things to spend taxpayer’s money on than children people don’t want to look after.

Do care is expensive too. But as yet taxpayers have not been asked to foot the bill for doggie day care
