Off the ball awareness and a great moment of control lead to the second goal yesterday

One of the standout players in the first half of last season before his injury and he's started pre season like a man on a mission.

Much as he wasn't great when he came on against Sunderland last week, yesterday he did a really good job. Showed a lot more quality and control on the ball and his counter attacking threat really helped us out. The way we saw yesterday's game out was night and day compared to the Sunderland game and Harness was a big part of that. I still think we can upgrade on him but if he can play like he did yesterday on a consistent basis then he's a very handy player to have in the squad.

I thought it was interesting to see a different approach from McKenna yesterday with Harness, Jackson, Hutchison and Burns altogether, that offered a lot pace on the counter when Stoke were chasing the game

Really don’t rate him but credit where it’s due, he was good when he came on yesterday. Hope he he makes me eat my words this season.

That said, as mentioned in this thread and elsewhere “his first touch was a lot more assured” - we are talking about a professional footballer playing one level below the premier league. This is literally the bare minimum we should expect.

Hopefully though a big slice of humble pie for me come May.

But that isn’t always the case. Some of the dobbins playing for Stoke couldn't trap a bag of cement. That’s why Morsy, Davis and co were picking them off and that’s the nature of Championship football. It’s a long way from the PL and always has been.

Harness showed good control and great movement. He found gaps down the side of Stoke time after time and because of the speed/way we try and play, they didn’t know whether to stick or twist. There’s a role for Harness. Great attitude too.

I couldn’t see much of the Jackson goal from where I was but seeing the footage back it was not a routine tap in. His movement away from the defender made the opening for Burns and thanks very much, goodnight. It was a length of the pitch smashing goal that left Stoke looking like a bunch of grand national losers.

My reply in that thread is basically word for word what I was going to repeat so that's useful.

I don't think anyone is 'binning him off' as much as Chaplin and Broadhead are on another level and if we did look to bring in someone else there he looked like one of the players who could be in a bit of danger.

He's clearly in the manager's plans though so I think he can rest easy.

Truly impaired.

Using the line "his first touch was a lot more assured” as some sort of caveat against his performance because of the level he's playing and it being bare minimum doesn't really work.

That type of comment is already in context with the touch being for championship level. They're not saying it was more assured for a Sunday league player.

I've been critical of his touch. It's an area of his game to improve. But I'm critical of it in reference to the required level. It's primarily his back to goal touch, where balls are fizzed up to him. Generally speaking he has good ball skill.

Good squad player with further improvement in him. He could still have a future.

Happy to hold my hands up and admit when I’m wrong, but how am I talking crap?

Widely discussed on here that his first touch is ropey and often referenced on the EADT podcast too. Hence he was most people’s favourite to get the chop this summer.

So assuming then you think then we’re all wrong?

Harness is judged unfavourably and IMO unfairly as he has a very good all-round game that goes beyond nifty feet and close control in the attacking third.

Chaplin and Broadhead are on another level with the ball at feet. But arguably Harness is on a different level as a defend from the front, pressing and combative presence that can keep us higher up the pitch. He also has a good ability to drift into the box late and/or get on the end of crosses. Plus he’ll also come deeper and be an extra midfielder/track runners which isn’t Broadhead or Chaplin’s game.

I’m pretty sure Harness is a key player (certainly off the bench) for McKenna. He’s an excellent Plan B and for closing out games where we still want to keep the pressure and intensity up.
