Feel worse about tonight than I did on Saturday 22:15 - Aug 29 with 5400 views | pointofblue | Yes, we replaced the entire starting XI but Reading made eight changes and had a load of kids out there, yet we made life very difficult for ourselves. I know we are looking to strengthen and I guess tonight, to an extent, shows why. On Saturday, we had a mad ten minutes but otherwise played really well against quality oppositiojn. Tonight felt more like us under Cook - a lot of possession, and lot of build up play but struggling to convert and (more) silly mistakes at the back against a pretty weak side. We're through, and that's good, but it was tougher than it should have been.

Feel worse about tonight than I did on Saturday on 22:32 - Aug 29 by John_Warks_Willy | I personally think winning again so quickly after Sat, however we did it with whatever personnel, is very important to our next more important game. Pressure straight back off and everyone can relax a little that they haven’t forgotten how to win. So cheer up and enjoy the ride |
JWW - you’re not dead after all! I was thinking or posting a ‘Where’s Willy’ post … then here you are.

No, I don't consider the FA Cup important.

Some of our supporters need to keep their flouncing in check. If we make the play offs this season, there is a possibility we are still going to lose 15 games this season.

True. Doesn't mean we can't be disappointed over them, though. Or not be as impressed with some performances compared to others.

Assume you don’t consider the championship important then as isn’t a secondary comp to the PL? Not much to look forward to this season eh?

Over the past 18 months you seem to have been desperate to grab hold of anything to justify not enjoying the ride under McKenna. It's very odd.

I support Ipswich, mate, so whatever league we are playing in I consider important. Cup competitions that have been devalued massively over the years and which we don't take seriously and have no chance of winning are of less concern to me.

It's one match, for which I posted I was not as impressed compared to Saturday, due to the relative quality of the opposition compared to who we had out there. No more than that.

This. You only have to look at past winners to see that the chance of winning it outside the top six is almost nothing, and whilst cup runs are fun, they just aren't important to a club in our position. Tonight wasn't important. The next round won't be important, a good run out and nothing else. We move on.

I think it’s the level or arrogance from town fans that annoys me more. We’ve just spent 4 years in a league we should have never have been in, didn’t even win that when we finally managed to get out of it and we are belittling competitions that we can only dream of winning. You’d see the attitude shift pretty quickly if we drew a big boy in the next round or got to the 1/4ers.

These games are important for our players who are not first team regulars, which in turn stimulates competition for places. None of which would work without some credibility from players and management as far as the cup competitions go.

As someone else said, the 1-0 victory over Arsenal was probably the high spot under Evans. And that came in the League Cup, bizarrely whilst we didn't have a permanent manager IIRC.

That just tells you how dreadful we were under Evans. As somebody who was at both games, yes it was exciting and a great night at home. But I’d trade it for 3 points in the league. I loved the FA Cup when it was as important if not more so than winning the league. It was special, as anyone who remembers those times will tell you. But those days are long gone. The Premier League, Man U opting out, the money impact, even the play off games have relegated it to a rubber bone competition. Fun, but not important compared to 3 points in the league. We can’t win it so it’s a runout for ressies and yoofs. Sad, but that’s how I see it. League Cup? Even less important, same use. Johnson’s Paint tinky tonk cup? Total waste of time. That’s just my personal view of where cup games stand now, borne out by the sides clubs put out. So sad. Just compare those teams to the one Bobby Robson put out in 1981 against Aston Villa in the cup when we were going for the lot.

Feel worse about tonight than I did on Saturday on 22:37 - Aug 29 by ChampionsofInnsbruck | I don’t get why we as a fanbase view any cup as “Mickey mouse” given that we’ve been devoid of any significant silverware for 40+ years now! Ipswich is a big enough club to take on and win the League Cup. Just look at what Leicester did in the 90s. There’s no reasonable we can’t. |
They’ll try and get as far as they can. Course nobody is arrogantly saying they wouldn’t be arsed if we win it. It’s just that people are also not arsed if we get knocked out either. It’s a reserve tournament. It used to be called the Milk Cup for heavens sake. It’d be embarrassing to have another star on the shirt because of it mind!! I’d trade 3 points over getting to the final.

I just don’t get this logic, you think we’d actually have a chance of winning the PL if we got promoted? We obviously wouldn’t, so by the same thinking even playing in the Pl would be a total waste of time? So we just want to stay in the championship forever where we have a chance of winning the league but also not to compete in any cup because we can’t win them? Jeez how exciting . Also, you can’t compare the squad game now to Sir Bobs team of over 40 years ago ffs…

I remember our League cup semi final v Arsenal. Ground barely a third full, with the universal thought.....it's only a Mickey Mouse Cup.
