Obviously great entertainment, but I wonder if McKenna might look to temper our approach a bit as the season goes on? We've looked very vulnerable to the counter attack against Leeds and Cardiff - most notably attacking our right hand side yesterday - and I'm sure other teams will have noticed that.
It will be interesting to see if we go a bit cagier at times as needing to claw back 2 goals too often will be a problem. Going all out attack to try and establish a lead is great to watch, but it really does give our defence a hard time - Clarke obviously didn't have a great game yesterday, but in fairness was left horribly exposed too often.
For now though, I'm more than happy to enjoy the goal fests! |  |

Seriously though... I thought Omari did superbly when he came on, defensively as much as going forward. Now, I'm a big fan of Burns, particularly on the point that if he was more successful with his crossing he'd be playing in the Prem (possibly) but someone tell me, cos I'm not sure, is he that great defensively? In my mind he's as likely to foul someone tracking back as he is fail tackling them. I'm being hyper critical to assess if Hutchinson will be breathing down his neck... if not as a starter, at least as a regular replacement on 65 or whatever.
Talking of the loans... come the winter I really do believe they'll all be ripping oppos apart. Blue tinted, biased, clueless, yeh yeh whatever :) |  |

I think Hutchinson is improving with each week, as you'd expect, and definitely gives us a great option from the bench for now, but as you suggest I think he'll be a huge asset as the season goes on. Having Taylor, Hutchinson and Williams on the bench is a big boost when opposition teams begin to tire, as I expect Scarlett will be also.
By contrast Norwich didn't have a strong enough bench yesterday to take advantage of Rotherham's tiredness in the last 20 minutes. |  | | |

That would be crazy. Chaplin is our most natural goalscorer (although Broadhead runs him a very close second). What I could see happening is:

No idea what you'd call the formation, perhaps a nominal narrow 433, but with the RB and Taylor both a bit advanced, and Davis super-advanced. Full backs both doing a lot of up and down, with Chaplin and Broadhead fairly narrow and with Taylor's presence in transition to defence allowing Morsy and Luongo to give a bit of extra cover to the full backs. Hutchinson is an interesting one. When I first saw him, I didn’t like the look of him. He ambled out, looked miserable, small and surly. When he came on, not much there. Could be a waste of a loan, thought I. I did say as much on here, but added that he needed settling in time as everyone does in a new place.
I watched him yesterday. My initial impression at the Stoke game was wrong. He walked out chatting and laughing with somebody, looked relaxed and a lot more comfortable. When he came on, omg. He tore in and ripped up their left side defence. He looked hungry for the ball and a really good prospect to me. I can see him hurting teams this season. Worked well with Williams too, who also impressed.
Burns? I think he’s a good player. He has pace, skill and a great attitude. Yes, some of his decision making leaves a little to be desired, but he’s always looking to get by, through and round his opponents into places they don’t like. Defensively? Not the best I’ve ever seen. |  | | |

On the other hand, teams will have to fear our attacking prowess and ability to come back even from a significant deficit. If they also don't defend really well, they'll find themselves pegged back, then overtaken, even if successful in getting a lead. Throwing bodies forward will be extremely risky.
Plus we have a superb shot-stopper, a decent understudy/cup 'keeper and another top goalie temporarily out injured even if they do break through. |  |

Chaplin is also a player opponents know they need to watch, that they can't give him an inch of leeway. Which, given his speed, movement, license to roam and instinct for getting into tricky positions, really messes up defences. | |

Cardiff's first goal yesterday to be fair was created using fast passing across the pitch but Ramsey was allowed to run from the midfield without a Town player tracking him. That happened at Sunderland and a couple of times at the Stoke game. Yesterday's first half did make me think we needed a Skuse type role (albeit adapted for this system) to screen the ball away from Clarke and seeing players getting doubled up on.
Likewise we needed Sears' trick of just cutting inside and drilling it low into the far corner from the left. Broadhead finally got the memo and did it a bit more spectacular, but those were two gaps in either side that seemed to be recurring all game. | |

Morsy and Luongo are superb at tackling, breaking up play and driving forwards, but they aren't the speediest midfielders around (they're very good, but no player at this level is the complete package). That "weakness" does enable faster Ramsey-type players to run away from them, particularly when attention is focussed elsewhere. | |

I actually thought Burns defensively was generally fine yesterday. He was often marking one player out of the game; it wasn't his fault Clarke was continually backing off and giving another player space rather than engaging. |  |

I think it might be more about defending better in the first instance, Clarke is showing the effects of missing a chunk of pre-season and is only starting because JD is injured. At the moment though we’re at risk of burning players out, Morsy and Luongo in particular but also Chaplin, before the clocks change.
On the other points raised in this thread, Hutchinson is getting better by the week, definite ability and a good work rate but obviously raw, particularly in his decision-making at times. He made one important tackle late on which, deservedly, got a big cheer.
It’s not unthinkable not to play Chaplin every match, his lack of physicality really showed against Leeds but also a bit yesterday which is part if the reason Morsy and Luongo had to work so hard. Our subs won as the match yesterday, so how McKenna utilises the squad will be important this season, it will be more complicated than last season because the opposition is better. |  |
