Arbor House not bad but slow service

anywhere else decent these days?

The Brewers is often overlooked and very underrated pub in general.

The correct answer is of course the Arcade Street Tavern.

Yes, great little pub and you can bring your own food before the match!

I was living over that way when it closed, so we went in for old times sake. The smell of old frying oil was over powering, the karzis were as Lucan remembers and it looked like the paper would peel off the walls with the stuff that had soaked into it. My previous visit had been watching us V Peterborough in 2011....

Agreed, and depsite being great for cask, for some reason the Greyhound and Woolpack seem to actively avoid decent keg ales so Arcade is the pub that gets both right for me.

The Greyhound has always been tied Adnams if I'm not mistaken, so can probably only have one guest ale at a time, which is the deal in some others? Not sure if same for the Woolpack... possibly seeing as Sue effortlessly segued there from the Greyhound, whenever it was, probably 25/30 years ago. Memory is not so hot on the detail :)

Fat Cat and Dove best free houses imho. We've done this before but you can do a cracking ale crawl even the unfit pot belly old farts like me can manage, starting at Fat Cat, then Dove, Woolpack, over park to Greyhound, Brewers Arms for a shot to give the stomach a rest, St Judes if you can stand the smell and comedy decor (good ciders and ales though), Arcade Tavern, then over to Thomas Wolsey, Black Adder, and The Nelson for a beef panini with gravy and chips.

You haven't specified in general, or specifically for a match day?

Near us, The Dove (what I would call my local) and Fat Cat are both very good. In town, often go in The Thomas Wolsey, and our usual 'pop in' on the way to the ground on a matchday if parking at my office has recently been The Swan.

Woolpack is a Punch pub, would have been Pubmaster back in the day

Never been Adnams? Explains why the beer was always okay :)

I think I'm also confusing the Spread Eagle and Black Adder.

Regardless, always thought Ipswich was good for an ale crawl, though it could probs support another two or three in the centre.

Where was the Trafalgar? Woodbridge Rd or Spring Rd?? It had dirty paisley carpets and didn't mind serving underage twerps. I'm assuming its not there any more but my directional sense/memory in that part of Ipswich, even though I'm still sometimes in the area, is appalling. Was there a kind of viaduct near the Trafalgar? And was the Nippin 24hr caff at the bottom of Woodbridge Rd? And near/opposite The Singing Chef?

The viaduct was on Spring Road but The Trafalgar completely passed me by (unsurprisingly as I am a North West Ipswich boy, although i hardly ever went into The Suffolk Punch. Always headed into town.)

I think the last time I went in there was David (Flash) Jays funeral and by then it was accepted that the car park was the official toilet, such was the smell of the official toilet

For some reason I'm now thinking of the sh1ttest pubs... The Royal George on Valley Road or is it Colchester Rd dunno, near Tuddenham rd was absolute dogwvank in the 80s. And I doubt it's any better. Possibly worse :)

Traf must have been Spring Rd then innit.

Mrs Dub went to the Royal George for a work meal a few weeks ago, she wasn't exactly glowing in her review to me afterwards.......

I went in The Royal George a few times in the Seventies and Eighties (and once in the Noughties for a family get together) and it was always a decent standard of decor and service then, but as boring as an inner ring road pub can be. Think it is Colchester Road at that point. Go a little way east and turn down Sidegate Lane and you ended up at The Golden Key (another Adnams tied pub) which was much more convivial.

I went in there a few years back, probably pre Covid and was a bit weirded out by it. 1 and only time I've ever been, it absolute stank of farts which wasn't ideal.

Is that the one and only time it's stunk of farts though? That's the question.
