Pounds, shillings and pence, Lbs, Chains, Furlongs, Miles, ahhh happy days. And the good news is that it’s so confusing and illogical we can rip Europe off just like the elderly here were ripped off in 1971 when decimalisation took place. I was of an age at junior school where I had to learn old and new money. Being rubbish at maths, it didn’t go well 😀. And I agree that everyone must drive on the left. Keeps your sword arm free, unless you are left handed. |
Surely the solution would be for right-handers to drive on the left and left-handers to drive on the right. Eliminate any confusion.

An independent currency allows you to raise or lower interest rates so making the pound stronger or devalueing it. If you join the Euro you have one size fits all. Which it doesn't. Look at Greece, allowed through the back door to join the EU. They were allowed to borrow substantial amounts and then couldn't afford to pay them back. So the EU loaned them money to pay the loan so they didn't default. Can you imagine a bank or finance Company loaning you or anyone 10 grand, you then can't pay them back so they give you some money to pay themselves their own loan.

But then neither will have their sword arm free so it doesn’t work. The solution is to allow all people to drive down the middle of the road. No confusion there! Time for Europeans and Britain to accept that Brunel was right. Broad Gauge is the way forward for comfortable rail travel.

Obviously we wouldn't get it but I don't think it's in their interest to screw us. We add a lot to the EU. It would be a great advert for the EU if the sceptical British came back. I'm not sure we could go back without the veto. It just wouldn't be acceptable to a good chunk of the population. If we have to lose some or all of the rebate as a consequence of leaving then so be it.

Two things. 1) Greece didn't join the European Union 'through the back door', they joined the EEC in 1981 (and the EEC became the European Union under the Maastricht Treaty in 1993) but the rules were considerably relaxed for them to join the Euro when the notes and coins were introduced in 2002 - you could use EZ for Eurozone if you want to stick to acronyms. 2) I can imagine financial institutions loaning money without the expectation of repayment. It happens when they get security on an asset (such as land) which they can gain ownership of in the event of default. And the Greeks are notoriously protective of their land...and the Germans like holiday homes in the Med... [Post edited 22 Sep 2023 10:48]

"Look at Greece, allowed through the back door to join the EU" while thats true it should also be remembered the ECB, or whoever, had to act to stop the likes ion Soros trying to the play the greek currency and the easiest way to do was the take it into the Euro In an imperfect situation it was the least imperfect solution [Post edited 22 Sep 2023 10:46]
