Possibly not. I’m not sure where the name changes, whether it’s at the top of the docks at Bridge Street or further up past the ground near the weirs at West End Road. But there’s loads of channel capacity by the ground and the river’s very controllable with those weirs. It would take something really special for it to flood from river water coming from upstream. I reckon you’d need a massive river flood to coincide with a very high tide/storm surge/increase in sea level before things got dicey.
According to the weather forecast, the wind isn't hitting until midnight Wednesday into Thursday, and the rain isn't getting heavy until around 7am Thursday so should be fine.

as you say some have always said its Stoke bridge which is the demarcation point because thats when the river becomes tidal, rather than flowing out into something, were it not for the lock gates obviously :)
others always say its where the split is around Yarmouth Rd, the bit going towards the Range and Handford bridge stays as the Gipping till it hits the weir at West End Rd, the bit going towards Sainsbury is then the Orwell.
the ground has flooded partially I think within the last 20 years, one of the pumping stations, which maintains the water levels in the rivers, nearby failed iirc
as has the docks area, when there was a storm surge and spring tide combined, like in 1953.
its why they spent 70 odd million on a flood barrier for the town as that whole area is a known flood risk, and why for instance along Princes St or anywhere around that area, all the offices were built with a ground floor gap, so everything started on the 1st floor.
but I think we'll be alright tomorrow. :)
