Ipswich referenced in comedy 14:42 - Dec 6 with 4726 viewsBognorJuniors

OK have been putting together a list of UK comedies that reference Ipswich - either the town or the club. Any others spring to mind?

- Only Fools and Horses (Tickets for Wimbledon....v Ipswich)
- The Office (Ipswich conference)
- I'm Alan Partridge (King Road, Ipswich)
- This Country (Sam Parkin transfer)
- Here We Go (Ipswich zen retreat)
- Thick of It (usual story we break is Ipswich manager resigns)
- People Just Do Nothing (passport to go to Ipswich)

Maybe it's a key part of a comedy being any good or not...

There was another reference in Alan Partridge. Was it monster trucks coming to Ipswich? It was the one with Peter Serafinowicz in it.

I feel there's more I haven't thought of yet.

Detectorists referred to us I think.(edit, confirmed by BentDouble above)

Edit edit. Inside number 9 (The 12 days of Christine) something about a present that they had to go to Ipswich for as that was the only store that had what she wanted.

Toast of London… “He rode a Horse all the way from Ipswich.”

Could have been Bluey or Crazee, he didn’t say the horses name

League of Gentlemen once mentioned Ipswich (one of Herr Lipp's foreign exchange indiscretions).

Not a comedy per se (it has funny moments though), but in the film Stardust a character says they had to go 'all the way to Ipswich'.

I'm almost certain there is a mention in an ep of Hancock's Half Hour too, but I cant find it. Sure it'll come to me eventually.

Most likely in the football pools ep of course.

I do remember in the 90´s there was a glut of Ipswich mentions in various comedic formats....the one that sticks out was the Vic and Bob book, which had what's on the end of the stick on the final page...it was Ipswich...I'm sure on bottom with Rik and Ade we got a mention.

Poll: Rugby World Cup Winner ?

I remember seeing Bottom live and there was an Ipswich mention but that was because that's where the venue was and they would swap the name in the joke for wherever they would happen to be that night.

Scanning the memory bank, I can't think of a mention of Ipswich in the TV series but I wouldn't be surprised if there was. Ipswich is one of those provincial, medium sized places on the edge of the country that lends itself to bring referenced for comedy value.

Yes,I should have mentioned not the live show as I knew they did that...but in the Tv series and you are right we were the perfect target for a while, but seems to have become less so and less mocking...which is a bit of a shame really, quite liked the teasing..wore it like a badge.
Maybe the 2006 murders changed it ?

Not comedy, but Ipswich gets a reference in both the TV adaptations of Tinker Tailor and Smiley's People.

TTSS - Ipswich is the game Sam Collins is watching when Operation Testify goes awry.

Smiley's People - commenting on young Mostyn leaving the service and joining a monastery near Ipswich, Saul Enderby observes that Ipswich is 'a bloody cold place to pray.'
