The 19 signings we made in the first gamechanger summer 09:18 - Jan 25 with 10525 views | itfcjoe | There was always talk about how some were Cook, and some were Ashton.....here is my attempt at splitting them up and hits/misses Ashton Burns - hit Harper - Miss Hladky - Hit Pigott - Miss Fraser - Miss Edmundson - Hit Edwards - Miss Barry - Miss Celina - Hit Cook Evans - Miss Chaplin - Hit Burgess - Hit Morsy - Hit Bonne - Hit Coulson - Miss Walton - Hit Don't know Penney - Miss Aluko - Hit Carroll - Miss Obviously other factors at play - i.e. Cook will have given his own players more chances than those more foisted upon him because he no doubt thought they were better players. And some of the signings were hits because of McKenna as opposed to Cook - i.e. Burgess

The 19 signings we made in the first gamechanger summer on 09:26 - Jan 25 by FrimleyBlue | So Ashton is actually quite terrible at recruitment. That doesn't give me confidence for this week Joe lol. Ahadme also has to go under the Ashton pot, no way was that a KM signing Also Bonne, still don't think you can call him a Hit, solely because it was a long term loan and he was only good for a qtr of it. so for me it has to be a miss. Tho what hits Hladky and Burns have turned out to be! The recruitment was worth it just for those two.

They have but Burns was PC's more than Ashtons. "Wes has been a target of mine for a while and we are delighted to have got him here,” Town boss Paul told the Club website."

The 19 signings we made in the first gamechanger summer on 10:39 - Jan 25 by itfcjoe | It was nothing about 'imposing' signings on the manager, more that what has been spoken about by Ashton previously that it was effectively all hands to the pump with everyone using their contacts to try and get deals done that there was a relatively natural split in how it worked. This isn't conspiracy, or an attempt to make anyone look bad, but merely my view on it and who was the driver for the transfers |
Made up, and echoing bristol city fans comments, is what it is.

It's pretty obvious that, say, the Harper and Edwards deals were driven by Ashton. Don't need any 'def info' to work that one out.

Ashton gave Burns his first professional contract, had him at Bristol City and was close with his family - most of these can go one way or another but still for me Burns comes down on Ashton's side

And it was definitely the case that everyone on the staff was asked for their input on who might be signed due to the lack of scouting staff at that point.

We didn't have a recruitment team, we had to just flush out all contacts we had, of which Ashton did having headed up the recruitment at Bristol City We now have a recruitment team in place, Ashton has empowered Gary Probert, Sam Williams and Kieran McKenna - it's nothing like how it was at Bristol City

The 19 signings we made in the first gamechanger summer on 10:36 - Jan 25 by redrickstuhaart | There wasnt much talk. Just a few trolls claiming without any evidence that Ashton was imposing signings on the manager. Still not a shred of a basis for the claims unless you can show us otherwise.... |
It's more about who had which contacts and brought one player or another to the table. The original finder, so to speak. Not saying that Cook didn't have final approval over who was hired. I doubt Cook would have stayed silent on such a matter, especially when things were going badly downhill or after he was sacked.

Good job they didn't ask on here. The results would have been wild and the club bankrupt within a week.

The 19 signings we made in the first gamechanger summer on 11:11 - Jan 25 with 1012 views | franz_tyson | I wouldn't say celina was a hit. Highest earner... biggest reputation... yet apart from a worldie and a few cameos, he was most often on the bench. Underpar... or OK at best... but not a hit. In the end, glad he didn't come back and much prefer a lesser talented - but more comitted - player like Harness. Harsh on Evans being a miss...if fit, would have contributed more.

Not sure it was too much different. I know the suggestion we might sign Jermain Defoe came out of that kind of brainstorming session. It didn't get any further than that, from what I'm told.

Paul Cook wanted to bring a load of analysts and scouts with him from Wigan .... which got vetoed at the time. [Post edited 25 Jan 2024 11:15]

Any idea who put Joe Pigott on the shortlist and how they're getting on in their career outside of football?
The 19 signings we made in the first gamechanger summer on 11:27 - Jan 25 with 922 views | Nutkins_Return | Edwards was a free transfer. Definitely a hit. Did he live up to the huge potential and initial hype, possibly not. Was he an important member of the squad and a free transfer. Yes. Hit. Played a lot more than Aluko who is down as hit (which I agree with for as much off the pitch stuff). Evans is definitely a hit as well. He was in our top 3 performers first half of title season. Made important contributions. Few injuries for sure but 100% hit. Was Chaplin Cook?

Edwards only played 6 more games than Aluko..

Its nice signing decent players who improve, rather than journey men who have had there time. I would say alot of our best side is still Cooks signings.

I think Ashton and Paul Cook worked surprisingly well together on transfers during that period. Im pretty sure Paul was happy with the names put forward by Ashton and had the final approval if needed. Think he even said he was 'excited' by the prospect of Harper especially..

But the 'if fit' is massive for Evans - by the time he leaves he will have played 46 league games across 3 seasons - that's just not enough (and I personally haven't rated him that highly when he did play bar a good dozen games at start of last season)

There will be a lot of overlap, both Cook and Ashton have been around League football for a long time, will know the same people.

Yep, he wanted to sign Jacobs as an example (who he has since signed at Chesterfield) and the deal was as done as it could be bar the literal final piece....Ashton then got wind Edwards was avaialble and we did that and just sacked off Johnson. But Cook would have had to agree to that, and was singing Edwards' praises to all who listened when he first had him - there certainly wasn't massive tensions brewing in that regard. Funnily enough, the one player who he wanted to get rid of almost straight away and replace was Cameron Burgess who was very much his signing

I got the impression Cook thought all his Christmases had come at once with all these signings, especially given the fact that he worked under such huge financial constraints previously. Felt like he was a kid in a sweet shop.
