Economic illiteracy 16:41 - Feb 9 with 1340 views | DJR | This doesn't seem to have been widely reported but is astonishing given it is the Chief Secretary to the Treasury talking. It could also be said that it shows the fiscal rule (to which both parties are wedded) to be a bit of nonsense. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-politics-68250372 [Post edited 9 Feb 2024 16:42]

Economic illiteracy on 17:06 - Feb 9 with 1272 views | Swansea_Blue | I'm not surprised by that in the slightest. It's a bit like imposing austerity policies and then openly saying you don't know why growth has stalled. Or claiming that wage rises (which are actually real-terms wage decreases) are driving inflation when it's being supply side cost increases including profiteering and supply chain disruptions. We're generally illiterate in many areas in the UK (in addition to the literal definition, although I'm sure the level of true literacy is probably not as good as it could be!). There's a conspiracy theory that the electorate are kept deliberately dumb to allow politicians to get away with things. There's probably a simpler explanation; a failure to recognise value in education leading to it being underfunded, combined with certain flawed ideologies being foisted onto schools by government (yes, looking very much at you Margaret Thatcher with your 'education market' approach).

Ignorance isn't sexy. If it was, Liz Truss and 30p Lee would be the most desired people on the planet.
