And we have the next potential US President happy to cosy up to Putin purely because he thinks he's tough.

The next few years from a geopolitical viewpoint are very scary

It’s easy to write Trump off as a bit of a joke - we’ve even seen it on here. But it’s a terrifying prospect. Russia has effectively moved to a total war economy- the reports of GDP growth there (albeit from a contracted economy), are almost entirely from military output. Now Putin has the Americans in a panic with reports of his ambitions to put nuclear weapons into orbit (in order to potentially launch crippling attacks on western satellites/communicarions). It does seem a little far fetched given Russia are still operating 1970’s tanks, but the US seem to be taking it seriously.

A sad state of affairs that all our hopes rest with Joe Biden…

Putting nuclear weapons in orbit makes no real tactical difference.

They can do the same thing launching them from the ground. They can also knock out satellites more precisely with missiles or probably lasers.

Sadly I think it’s a given that Trump gets back in, I can’t see anything else.

We aren’t far behind them.

Space research is a completely different department to that producing tanks. Moreover, the technology to put up satellite-killer nuclear weapons has been around for decades - just banned by international agreement: The 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits putting nuclear weapons into orbit and to which Russia is a party.

It renders the US anti missile capabilities redundant, they could feasibly be intercepted if terrestrially launched, in orbit they cannot. Russia don’t probably have a laser weapon capable of that - publicly at least.

It's incredibly difficult to intercept a ballistic missile although it would be possible during the launch phase but the Russian's would just launch when it was nearer their territory.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peresvet_(laser_weapon)

Given this is public, I am sure they have something better much like the US and China.

Deploying nukes in space is pretty pointless but sounds good when Putin is playing to the crowd.

Putin is tough. His opponents disappear and he tries to carry out what he says.

Navalny dies after going for a walk. That’s maybe he lost his footing or something. I’m amazed he lasted so long. Obviously served his purpose to Putin so cheerybye Navalny. A useful lesson to anyone who wants to go up against him.

Let’s face it, Putin is up against a senile of man or a nut job who admires him and sees a future America as a strong ally and friend to Russia. Fear of the west? Hardly.

Just because our government aren’t throwing people off balconies doesn’t mean we can’t moan about endemic corruption and incompetence. Don’t forget this lot we’re happy to trouser money from Putin’s pals, let them launder their assets in the London property market, and embolden Putin with a limp-wristed response to his invasion of Crimea.

I'm not sure that this is the stirring defence of the British government you think it is.

The UK government prefer the more old fashioned, gentlemanly way of murdering people by cutting services and payments, ramping up disaster capitalism, spreading misinformation and encouraging military actions which are definitely not a bit genocidey.

It’s not about him sacrificing his allied but his allies taking the US for mugs. If the US says pay for your own protection, why shouldn’t they? Forget other European countries, we too have taken a post Cold War axe to defence and in real terms are continuing to do so.

I'm not sure that saying 'crack on Vlad' is the way to tackle it though.

Although, being actually able to respond to threats isn't Trump's motivation here. He's looking to keep his boss happy.

The way to tackle it is for the western countries to stop relying on others to do their dirty work and to start considering defending themselves. It’s not difficult. The Germans, French, Italians and U.K. should be taking a lead, not hiding.

‘We haven’t got the money’. Of course we have. Loads of it. Instead of the high alter of tax cuts, put a couple of pence on income tax, maybe a little more for the higher tax bands and start providing better public services and sufficient finance to protect ourselves, internally and externally.

In the 1950s defence spending ranged from about 6% to just under 10%. That was with a busted postwar economy, rebuilding of housing and the creation of the welfare state. We spend just over 2% at the moment.

There is no will for this country to defend itself, any more than there is in Germany, France and Italy. Not while America provides. Poland are trying, but they know they’re next to Putin’s meal table. 4%? Not enough if they want to keep that monster Putin at bay.

As for Trump, I wouldn’t trust that sack of sh#£ as far as I could volley him so perhaps saying crack on Vlad might just incentivise the west to get off its bloated rear.

Biggest myth about Homophobic Dobby is that he's 'tough'. The genuinely tough don't need to start military distractions, victimise minority groups or clamp down on anyone who disagrees with their in order to maintain their status.
