Yep that was exactly the time. Think from memory I stayed off here for a few days after that because I didn’t want to let anything slip. Because obviously once he decided to stay, I didn’t want to seem like I was stirring anything up when we were in a promotion push.
Quite literally everything was completed other than the compensation from palace to us. His wages, his staff going with him etc was all done and then McKenna pulled the plug.
The Brighton stuff never got as close as that though but Brighton did expect to have him through the door by the end of the week |
Appreciate you weren’t able to share any of this previously (and well done for holding your tongue, many wouldn’t have been able to help themselves), but thank you for sharing this insight now. Amazing to think we were that close to such a disaster at such a key point in our season - especially looking back at how we tore it up in the weeks that followed.

Us going up was far more important than some points on the internet and I felt that saying anything about it might’ve given us even 1% less chance of promotion. So I was more than happy to just say nothing.
Glad I finally can say something now though without it being in a negative light.

If I've looked it up correctly, we were 1 win in 9 at the time and then after his decision won 6 in a row, so an absolutely crucial decision to stay. |  |

If he made the squad aware that he had turned down a good offer from Palace because he believed in them getting to the Prem too, that must have given them a fillip as well. |  |

Seeing as you’ve mentioned it publicly, can I elaborate as to the Crystal Palace situation? Asides from a few PMs, I’ve been biting my tongue for ages about it haha..
For 12 hours in February McKenna had actually agreed to join. Everything was done and dusted other than the fee palace would give us. The rest was completely sewn up. Then late in the evening McKenna contacted Crystal Palace to say that he was doing a u-turn because he believed that ‘the project wasn’t complete’ at Ipswich. But for 12 hours he was genuinely a gonner. That’s how close it got. |
I love the ‘the project wasn’t complete’ phrase. I really feel that for us, the project won't be complete until we win another trophy, and if we are really being greedy get into the Champions League for the 1st time. I know that is a massive ask given we have only just entered the Premier League, but we have such massive momentum behind us, and we are not in this football game just to make up the numbers.
It will take a master plan to get anywhere close to this, but the togetherness we have is a huge asset. |  |

That very much fits in with what I've heard. He was close to joining Palace in February before deciding to stay and seems the situation with Brighton was very similar. As I and others said, we expected him to move to Brighton but he stalled as or just as the interest from Chelsea and Man U came in. Chelsea no longer interested, Man U looks to be taking its time and other bigger fish seem of interest, and Town evidently have done enough to keep him here. |
How does this story breaking work? Have the club leaked something to a few journalists? The athletic seem fairly confident on it, but what would their source have been?
Im a but surprised that its not a formal announcement after the new contract has been signed
