A broad church. on 09:54 - May 29 with 8414 views | DJR | John McTernan: Labour should hang their heads in shame Senior Labour figures responsible for the handling of Diane Abbott’s case “should hang their head in shame”, Sir Tony Blair’s former director of political operations has said. John McTernan told Times Radio last night: “It’s not for the Labour Party to ban a woman with Diane Abbott’s record to stand for the Labour Party if that’s what she wishes to do. “This kind of briefing, it’s aimed at humiliating her and that is disgraceful. It’s just utterly disgraceful. It’s a process that’s been designed not to resolve issues... It’s a process designed just to drag things out and humiliate Diane Abbott. “And whoever’s responsible for this should hang their head in shame. It looks like it’s crass, politically-motivated and designed to hurt her. It’s nothing more or less than kind of factional disdain.” EDIT: as if to rub salt in the wounds Labour were briefing last night that the restoration of the whip yesterday was designed to give Abbott a bit of dignity, and that there were health issues that might prevent her standing. The term duplicitous doesn't do it justice, especially when coupled with the whopper that Starmer said a couple of days ago about the process still being ongoing. I am just glad I am no longer a member of a party that stoops so low. [Post edited 29 May 2024 10:07]

Every press opportunity will be dominated by this issue and rightly so. Strange electionering technique.

But I think they calculate that it will blow over pretty soon, with an election in full swing, and that it would have caused more trouble if announced earlier, not least because Labour MPs would have been still sitting in Parliament. As Jo Moore might have put it, "it is a [relatively] good day to bury bad news". [Post edited 29 May 2024 10:45]

it is very sad. she is an historically significant figure, and deserves respect for that. it is bad that it came to this. but the party's real shame lies in the fact that it ever put her forward as a potential home secretary. that's the really unforgivable bit.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

A broad head on 12:14 - May 29 by DanTheMan | Some images when searched through Google (especially on mobile) will give you a link something like the following. (Ignore brackets, just stopping TWTD link detection kicking in) [https]://images.app.goo.gl/8wnhxKAiXbRdSRda8 This is not a direct link to an image, it's a link to a page on Google which would display the image. If I follow your link through (removing the .jpg bit) I get a page with the image wrapped with some Google stuff. On a PC, you can more easily get the actual image URL which looks like [https]://e0.365dm.com/23/10/2048x1152/skysports-nathan-broadhead_6335633.jpg So that's why it breaks, whatever you're using the get the image url is giving you to Google link and not the underlying image url. I know Chrome on mobile does this, I think Firefox lets you get at the proper link. [Post edited 29 May 2024 12:15]

A broad church. on 12:48 - May 29 with 7585 views | jayessess | One thing that's going to become very apparent is just how unpleasant some of the more right wing people in the Labour Party are. Particularly some on the "Labour to Win" slate on their National Exec, some of whom are about to get gifted a safe parliamentary seat (with the incumbent getting a House of Lords nom as a quid pro quo). Apparently they'd struck an agreement with Abbott to be re-admitted and then retire, with eulogies from all and sundry about her accomplishments (first Black woman in parliament etc.), but likely someone in that little knot of creeps just couldn't bare to show a little respect and started briefing the press about her being banned from standing. your story about the press being briefed doesn't match the bbc's: "Hours later, it was revealed that Abbott's suspension had been lifted and the whip restored. Abbott then texted a BBC reporter this morning, saying Labour had barred her from standing for the party at the general election. She later posted on X, saying she was "dismayed" at the reports she had been barred." so the being barred story originated with abbott and she was then dismayed by the reports that had actually originated with her.
