Shaving Question 19:54 - May 29 with 6574 viewswkj

I have been shaving for my entire adult life, but have recently noticed "Harry's" products becoming more and more available. I have quite sensitive skin so I have to be pretty careful with what razors I use.

Does anyone here use 'Harry's'? If so, how do they stand up to Gillette Labs etc

Ahh I'm just yanking your chain! Did she shave???

Well he clearly didn't get that far to find out, as he says, he's an honourable married man.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

She did tell me that she shaved her fanny daily, whilst thinking of me scoring the winning goal against Stowmarket Wanderers in 1980.

It's all a load of sh1t.

No way can Harry produce a competitive blade to someone like Gillette.

It's all marketing - ask Sticky Mockwell, he knows about these products, despite being a lazy hippy.

Harry’s is owned by a multi billion dollar U.S. company
Dollar shave club was owned by Unilever and now some other company
Gillette is owned by P&G

They’re all the same sh1t with a different names.

Personally I’ve got a Phillips electric razor that cost about £50 a few years ago and works just fine to keep my stubble in check and my boll0cks neat

Not sure I care

One thing though - I had a girlfriend at school called Nancy - in the third year.

I met her again at a school reunion about 15 or more years ago.

Fecking HELLS BELLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She looked extraordinary!

Worst thing is - we still really clicked and she had just got divorced.

It was on an absolute plate but for all my faults I am an honourable man to my wife.

I had to refuse the absolutely stonking Nancy ****

Just relayed this story to Miss Slave. She was appalled! "But what did he do wrong" said I "nothing happened." "How did he know it was on a plate? He must have been flirting, " said she! Looks like you probably should have, we really can't do right for doing wrong.

Agree, been using a DE safety razor for about twenty years and do use a new blade with every shave, cost pennies so no biggie.

They are much better for your skin, lessen the chance of ingrowing hairs and are a fraction of the cost, a tiny fraction at that.

If anybody decides to venture down this route then expect a few nicks to start with as you adjust your style, and would reccommend finding somewhere that does sample packs of blades so you can work out what you like.

There's a very good forum dedicated to shaving called badger and blade which has lots of advice, reviews etc.

It's an absolute rabbit-hole, isn't it?! A bit like getting into coffee, or barbecuing. You'll do perfectly fine with a basic setup, or you could chase fine margins by spending hundreds of pounds.

I've got a Wilkinson Sword razor that I got out of a Christmas gift set (~£15) about ten years ago, a bowl of Tabac shaving soap (£14) that I've had for about three years and is still more than half full, a cheap synthetic brush (£5), and I'm working my way through a 100-pack of Derby blades (£5) that I bought at about the same time as the soap.

It's a little bit of an initial outlay, but I've not spent a penny on shaving since the pandemic.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Right, back on topic!

Interesting, I'm spending circa 20 euros on blades every 10 days. What are these Derby blades?

I've been working my way through various forms of Gillete Fusion gel for months and months!!!

Perhaps other forms of shaving lubrication might serve me better? (Yes I know how that question reads...

Hit my late 40s and now my neck irritation when shaving is horrendous. Wet shave still the closest. Electric less irritation but doesn’t get as close a shave.

Do you use foam or cream or similar? If so, don’t. It’s a myth. All you need is a sharp razor and hot water.

They're these:

https://amzn.eu/d/4FH5A6G

I'd seen them used by a few of my barbers, so assumed that they're fairly decent quality, and they certainly seem to fit the bill.

I'm probably getting better mileage out of them than most as I only shave once or twice a week, and when I do I'm just neatening up the edges of my beard. Still incredibly good value, though.

I have wet shaved for 30 years or so, and use Gillette Fusion blades. They're expensive, and I cant stand the company, then I saw the ads for Harrys and thought I'd give them a try. Didn't like them at all, so I contacted them and got a refund, which they were fine about. Then I looked on Amazon, and saw you could get large packs of Gillette Fusion blades for half the price. They have Arabic writing on them, so can only assume they are imported, but they seem to be pretty close to the ones you buy in supermarkets. Good shaving gel for sensitive skin is important.

I find gel clogs the blades. As a former acne sufferer I struggled for years , then found own brand foam was the best! I always envied those who could shave without having to plan
around weekends, functions or whatever . Roaccutane sorted the acne(in my mid 30’s), now I sport a short trimmed beard/stubble to relieve the skin. Also covers the signs of aging!

I tried Harrys when they were only available on line. Went back to Gillette after four months. Better shave with Gillette and more comfortable to hold.

Try a Venus Lady Shave.

I used WifeSentence's one a while back having run out of spare blades for my own.

Feck me, whata revelation. Amazing shave, and you get this smooth creamy stuff applied automatically as you shave. Never looked back, I only ever use these now.
