Big congratulations to Mrs GB. From a traveller background she left school at 15 with no formal qualifications. Runs her own business and brought up 4 kids (5 if you include me). Now at the age of 55 she has left a one year college course with three straight “A” s and starts a four year University course at Glasgow in September. Incredibly proud of her.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

She should be proud of herself and your right to be so proud of her as a family.
The fact that university level education is still so rare amongst the traveller community is really disappointing.
Young travellers rarely get support from their families when it comes to education and especially university level education. ( which is probably why so many travellers with university education reach this level later in life as mature students)
The only we we break this stigma is by more and more people from the community reaching these education levels and talking proudly about it

I think it's changed since my Mrs was a teenager. When she was growing up the kids were expected to take over the family business, whether it was an arcade, dodgems, big wheel etc. And travellers were expected to marry into the community so a wedding was more like merging a business.
My Mrs broke away at 16 and went into the fashion industry, which was a rarity. Her sister continued to travel and married another traveller. But both their kids had far better education opportunities than their generation and are at uni. As are a few of my wife's old friends kids.
BTW, her mum, who is 80, doesn't really understand her achievement. She seems to think that it's like going to night school.
She was also saying that there were never any gay travellers. Obviously there were, but they would never dare to come out. That has also changed in the next generation. Sadly, mental health seems to be an issue. My wife has lost two male friends from her age group to suicide in the last year.

Glad to hear that thing things are improving regarding education in your wife's circle. Unfortunately I'm not sure that's always the case especially in Ireland. (possibly/hopefully traveller communities in the UK have more enlightened views on education)
My own family/ have very few views negative or positive on education. They just don't really see it as something that concerns them. I went to university as a mature student in the late 90,s and have a close family member who took about 15-20 years to even recognise the word archaeologist. Use to ask me how the architecture was going .
Has you say mental health and the high suicide rates amongst the community are other issues that aren't being talked about

Cheers. That "architecture" quote made me chuckle.
