I would always take my phone when out hiking but if you're hit by heat stroke and / or had a serious fall it's not really going to make any difference anyway.
Very sad news this morning, can't imagine what his wife and family must be going through right now. |

The alternative is to wear something like an Apple Watch. You can disable to phone app if you don’t want to be disturbed but the GPS will continue to work so if you get into trouble you will be located quickly. Plus, if you fall and are conscious you can press the SOS button which will call emergency services. |
The sensible thing is not to wonder off alone at the hottest time of the day. I take a phone but switch off data roaming to avoid the charges but guess its still detectable.

Just been announced on 'Broadcasting House' that the police have found a body that had been dead for a few days. |
The few days bit makes me think he died as/when he hit the ground, so having a phone with him wouldn't have made a difference in terms of survival.

A lot of people also aren’t wedded to their phones. You’d probably take it if it’s somewhere new, but I certainly don’t a lot of the time. Who knows? Maybe it would have helped, maybe not. Something like a severe heart attack and it makes no difference (although would help to locate him while it’s on, of course).

Having gone off on one at Blueas for the slightest suggestion of never walking solo I now have to admit to often carrying a Personal Locator Beacon (communicates with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency via satellite in extreme emergency) when kayaking or visiting remote bothies (more for the possibility of arriving at one and finding someone in greater physical distress than my rudimentary first aid skills can cope with then in expecting to be in difficulty myself.) I'm not going to castigate Michael Mosley for forgetting his phone, people have been wandering around this planet for a million years or more without one. |
Slightly odd last comment - no-one's castigating, just saying it's unusual in this day and age. Yes people have been wandering around without phones for millions of years, but they've also been dying much earlier than they do now because they didn't have the technology and/or understanding we now have.
Michael Mosley has always been a bit of a 'go-getter', throwing himself into stuff, taking on challenges and has always seemed pretty fit for his age. Maybe a bit overconfident, perhaps. | |

I just found it odd in this day and age that someone would go off for a long walk in a foreign country, with tricky landscape and in extreme heat, without a phone. It goes without saying that if someone dies instantly their phone is no help to them. | |

I've recently returned from the Greek Islands and bought a Greek vodaphone Sim Card on arrival. It was pointed out to me that on some of the smallerI slands coverage is patchy.
Symi may be a case in point and maybe the reason he left it behind.
