Preferred England line up…. 09:50 - Jun 10 with 4930 viewsBloots

….not seen a preferred England team line up:

I’d go 4:2:3:1.

Rice as the single “pivot”, Bellingham free midfield role, Foden in his preferred “10”. Might swap Palmer for Gordon, but I’d go for:

Pickford

Walker
Guehi
Stones
Trippier (Shaw if fit)

Rice
Bellingham

Saka
Foden
Palmer

Kane

S or bust, innit.

Would love us to do something like that, as I think most of country would, but you know Southgate won't go that attacking.

We know Rice has that midfield role nailed down, but who to play next to him is the challenge. I think playing JB next to him potentially leaves Rice quite exposed. It would mean JB would have to play a more disciplined game and that would handcuff him a bit. In your formation I could see that Stones could perhaps step up and provide a bit of cover, but that again leaves us vulnerable against a quick turnover.
I see JB playing as one of the 10s behind Kane.
It's a tricky call for Southgate.
The rest of your team will be there or thereabouts I'm sure.

Snap! Except that I have my head in the sand and haven't contemplated who should play at LB if Shaw is not fit.

It may be that this is too attacking, or risks shackling Bellingham too much. If that is the case, you have to leave out one of Saka or Palmer, play Bellingham in a more advanced role and maybe accompany Rice with TAA or Mainoo.

Attacking options aplenty. Would've been a lovely squad for a Keegan or a BFJ!

Whatever you think of Grealish, the fact that he can't even get in the squad speaks volumes. And Sterling is not even close to carrying the bags - he's still in his 20s and played over 30 premier league games this season.

This has got to be the time that Southgate strings together a few knockout wins against properly credible teams. The draw may not open up for us this time, and we have to win anyway. How? Goals!

(if you're gonna lose to Iceland (it's becoming a tradition...) then the only way out of it is to get on the front foot!)

I love Janoi Donacien too, but I'm pretty sure his international allegiance is with Saint Lucia :)

If you mean Jude Bellingham, then I agree absolutely with what you say. It's then a question of who you leave out of the XI (Saka? Palmer?), and who you plonk in the Luongo role next to England's Morsy. TAA or Mainoo?

Pickford

Trent
Guehi
Stones
Gomez

Rice
Wharton

Saka
Bellingham
Foden

Kane

Thoughts:
- Walker doesn't give us enough at full back, and that it is a problem without the left back being a bomber. Would accept Walker + Shaw if fit. Also think TAA has been our standout in the warm-up games (admittedly a pretty poor sample of games)
- We've looked a bit ponderous in possession in those games, so I'd like Wharton in to play passes through the lines. Get it to our front four in dangerous areas as quickly as possible
- I think Bellingham in the hole is a better pairing for Kane as he'll get behind him more often than Foden/Palmer would.

Don't bring people in just because they looked good in one game. Mainoo was brilliant against Belgium but woeful versus Iceland, for example.

Pickford
Walker - Stones - Guehi - Grippier
Rice - Alexander-Arnold
Saka - Bellingham - Foden
Kane

Yep this would be my choice too. TAA as well as providing attacking balls from deep also gives a bit more defensive cover for Rice to get forward. It would be a shame to sacrifice Rice's attacking instincts playing him as the sole pivot.

Just find it incredible we can't find a left footed player to play left back for England. It's an issue that Trips can't pop a cross over unless he cuts back, which can lose all momentum.

And no, Leif isn't quite ready.

….the left sided attacking role is up for grabs.

I just hope he doesn’t shift Foden out there.

…right with TAA next to Rice.

Southgate will probably go that way, I just think it’s a shame that we then have to shift the attackers around to accommodate two more defensive CMs.

Foden looked awful in the number ten position against Iceland and City play him a drifter from the left. The trouble, again, is a lack of left footed attacking full back without Shaw. With him there, Foden drifting in opens up space for Shaw to run into. Without him it's an issue.

You have to feel it is slightly too early for Davis but, with the way we play, he would fit into the England line up as both us and the national team utlitise the left back position in a similar way.

Refreshing to see someone put Foden at No10 rather than Bellingham.

I like your line up, although LW is probably debatable.

Don't mind it, as TAA offers something different.

Although I think Bellingham may be more useful deeper, and Foden at 10.

Without Bellingham deeper, I thunk we may struggle to progress to the forwards. His leadership would also be good further back.

I'm hoping the official squad numbers (revealed recently) give us a massive clue as to Southgate's preferred first eleven:

1 Jordan Pickford
2 Kyle Walker
3 Luke Shaw
4 Declan Rice
5 John Stones
6 Marc Guehi
7 Bukayo Saka
8 Trent Alexander-Arnold
9 Harry Kane
10 Jude Bellingham
11 Phil Foden

Which suggests 4-2-3-1

Pickford

Walker Stones Guehi Shaw

Alexander-Arnold Rice

Saka Bellingham Foden

Kane

I'd be happy with that (esp with Palmer, Eze, Mainoo, Wharton, Bowen, Watkins, Gordon, Toney as midfield/forward options to come off the bench)

Saka Foden Palmer just would not work. They would be tripping over each other.

Saka Bellingham Gordon is a more likely front 3. Much more balanced. Foden never had a good game for England. Cant see him starting.

That is exactly how we should set up. Get's the best out of Foden and gives Bellingham a real chance to influence the games. If only.
