Cows do charge. I agree a solo calf probably wouldn't. But a scared animal running out of control is plainly a danger.

A herd of cows in a field will, yes.

This was a young, small frightened calf on its own though, no threat to anyone (though I take someone’s earlier point that urban police won’t be experienced in such matters, they could have phoned the RSPCA or standby vet as a first move; not just run it over.

Though given that this is Staines it was probably strapped as well.

I don't mind if it's just horns. At least you have the option to stay well away from um and you'll be OK. I'm more worried about the possibility of them all getting together and deciding enough is enough and braking out the firearms.
I've noticed groups if um standing together in the corners of fields and their clearly plotting something

To be fair to plod, I’m guessing stray cows aren’t exactly a common thing to deal with in urban areas. If they’re not getting out the lasso unit, running it over seems to be the only choice. Tasing it probably wouldn’t have gone down too well

Cows are very dangerous ... when protecting calves. I am sure the RSPCA will get involved in this case. They should push for a prosecution as the behaviour was wholly disproprtionate. Those who are cruel to animals frequently end up being cruel to humans too. This was nothing short of animal cruelty.

I’m assuming they didn’t want a traffic accident to occur. A few years back some traffic cops ran down a large dog running free on a busy road without trial by social media.

Unless you’ve worked on a farm and realise how powerful and difficult to control a relatively young cow is you’d best keep your righteous indignation to yourself.

They had multiple hours to find someone with the experience and skills of herding a cow safely.

Deliberately driving a 4x4 police truck into it wasn't the solution.

Any farmer does that and gets videoed doing it and the RSPCA would be prosecuting the hell out of them.

There's a big difference between dogs and cows (well a few, but one that's pretty pertinent in terms of running around lose in public).

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I have worked on a farm (& also lived on a dairy farm for 20 years).

Young calves on their own in an alien environment are not a threat to humans unless the humans are threatening it. Quite powerful & difficult to control yes, but 2-4 plods with a rope or belts from their trews could have controlled it, or police cars boxed it in.

Do you think if this had been a human with a knife who was running between cars & posing a threat to the public, Surrey police would have just contained the situation by running him/her over?

I do see your point, and it is sad that it came to that.

However, animals are unpredictable, and this cow loose in a highly pedestrian urban area could lead to the loss of life through traffic accidents etc, the cow becoming frightening etc. it had to be dealt with this way as a last resort in this situation as it unravelled.

I think I would be more pissed off if I lost a loved one as a result of them coming round the corner and suddenly hitting or swerving a cow, cause the police were farting about with it.

It’s been referred to the relevant ombudsman etc, so lessons will be learnt either way.

Not.

I never cease to be amazed at some takes on here.

Please do enlighten us as to what your way of dealing with the situation would have been.

EDIT - Apologies Bankster, read in haste on my phone before rushing off at h-t to do stuff, thought you were replying to me!
