Maybe it’s because the team isn’t a team but a ragbag of individuals, most with modest ability. Maybe it’s because he is carrying an injury. Maybe it’s because the players don’t know what position or way they’re supposed to be playing. Maybe, as with all England players he’s over hyped and been made to look better than he is by better Real Madrid colleagues. I’ve no idea, not really watched him. Either way, I’ve been seriously unimpressed with Bellingham in this tournament. He’s offered next to nothing. If he’s our best player, put him in what his best position is and let him play. If that means he and Foden occupy the same space, put one on the bench as an impact sub, McKenna style - and in that style bring on the cavalry after an hour. If puzzled Southgate is to continue with this weird mess of a team, it hardly matters. We only have one, possibly two more games before the TUI flights cart them off to their no doubt yearned for holibobs. I’ve no idea from the old armchair, but my view is they’d do a lot worse than dropping Kane for Watkins and playing those that came on yesterday. As the tv wallahs said, with every sub they looked better. If that means they’re a young team, great. Let them go out and express themselves. They have nothing to lose. Lastly, Trippier: all over the shop. Oh, and not taking a left back. Really? How dumb is that. Ok, Shaw. Even if the bloke can be wrenched away from the treatment table and pool, he was never going to be match fit, leaving them with no left back. Any proper left back would be better than trying to shoehorn in somebody who isn’t. I watched Holland v Austria earlier. Austria are a team of relatively modest individuals. Every one of them knew exactly what they were doing, bit like England’s opponents last night. They deservedly beat a more talented Dutch team. Amazing what you can achieve if you get people organised, happy and believing in what they are doing.

Gordon and Palmer either side of Watkins, Bellingham at 10, Mainoo and Rice behind. Foden, Saka as impact subs on the hour if it’s not working. Kane and Toney on in the 118th minute should it be going to pens.

Bellingham would be more effective for us if Kane didn't insist on hogging his space at every opportunity. He's and absolute monster in and around the box but in terms of a #9 to stretch defences and create the conditions in which those around him can thrive he's been dreadful. I would either go 2 up front with Kane & Watkins or just start Watkins to be honest. Kane is England's Ladapo right now. Should've taken George Hirst innit. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

If you can drop Kane you and drop Bellingham. He hasn't turned up in the last two games. ETA - And his performance against Serbia was over-rated. [Post edited 26 Jun 2024 11:42]

The Slovenia match was a perfect opportunity to try something different. The irony is that we're likely to play more expansive teams now so Bellingham may actually start to shine in those circumstances. Re. Shaw, I wish players were just more honest. He knows better than the medical staff how fit he actually is. He probably knew he'd fall short for this tournament, but convinced Southgate he'd be okay in time. Piles on the pressure for the manager. I thought we played a lot better last night. 3/10.

Luke Shaw last played a competitive game on 18th February, when he played 45 minutes. He last completed 90 minutes on 2nd January. Totally idiotic to have wasted a squad place on him when he can't possibly be anywhere near match fit. Even stupider when he's the only natural left back in the squad. And this involves no hindsight whatsoever.

As the socialist warrior said last night the best left back in his time at Manure was the right footed Denis Irwin.

You've been a tad economical with the truth. His missus is having their third child and he wants to be with her. How old is he? Are they catholic?

Might be a blessing in disguise if it means Gordon is drafted in to play on the left.
