Took an innocent pet food related question 21:49 - Jun 26 with 6338 views | textbackup | To a dog breed specific forum earlier today… I think you’d get treated better if you said, on here, that you supported Tommy Robinson! They were not happy that I mentioned I’d be moving my puppy to dry food as opposed to raw meat (at a cost of £5 a day 😂) On looking, most were based in the USA. However, what do you have your dogs on? We have a 2 year old golden retriever, been on dry her whole life, beautiful coat, healthy, clean teeth. Just added a German Shepherd, 9 weeks old, the breeder had him on 1kg of raw meat a day! (Not even puppy food, was adult stuff) to me, seems a little excessive… my last GSD was on Aldi mixer and Aldi tins, lived to 13 and had only 1 vet visit his entire life! Any advice would be welcomed

When you say raw, do you add rice/veg etc so they are getting everything they need? Or purely meat

Occasionally they will also get raw veg, but other than that it's purely raw meat - I should add the meat will contain bones sometimes. I know there is arguments for and against that. I also appreciate raw meat diet has suddenly become trendy, as its viewed as 'that is what they eat in the wild', but I just find you get less problems with raw meat. I've owned 20+ dogs over a 60+ year period and they've all lived long lives with very few illnesses on raw meat
So, we used to have a Greyhound.... on 22:26 - Jun 26 with 3773 views | Bloots | ....she was a racer, when she retired we took her in as a pet. She had a fairly delicate stomach, so she got a mixture of cooked chicken and dry stuff, with a bit of gravy if she was good. When she went, we got a lurcher from a pup. I promised myself that she would only get dog food, whether it was dry or wet. Giving her cooked chicken wasn't going to be an option, it's a pain to constantly be cooking for her. Plus obviously it's expensive. Anyway, we tried her on various dry foods and various wet dog meats and she would quickly get bored of it and we kept having to change. She occasionally got cooked chicken, which she loved. Then she started getting it a bit more often. Now she gets chicken and veg at lunch, followed by chicken, veg and a bit of dry food (sometimes with gravy) in the evening. Sometimes she has beef mince, sometimes a bit of offal. Always cooked. .....I spend a lot of time cooking food.

Nope. I am making a key point, tangential to the OP. If people stopped having dogs, these issues wouldnt be a concern and the country would be a better place.

I've got 2 lurchers who eat anything. That's probably because they were both rescue dogs and underweight so probably were fed on rubbish food and not much of it. They have a tin each of wet food in the morning and dry in the afternoon. They mainly have Harringtons dry food and a mixture of wet. They love Butchers Tripe wet food and anything fishy. I always put salmon oil on their wet food everyday. They have brilliant coats because of it.

I’d take the companionship and unconditional love of a dog over most people any day. Lost my Goldie a year ago today and miss her terribly. In response to the op, found Burns to be the best dry food for her but appreciate that all of the breeds have different requirements.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

It’s ok to just say ‘I can’t care for anything but myself’ nobody would judge you mate FWIW I’d rather the world was run by dogs and we were their pets. Would be far less issues [Post edited 27 Jun 2024 9:30]

What is it that would improve to make the country a better place as a result of not having dogs? Genuinely curious. Personally I find that having a dog is excellent for my mental and physical health.

My grandparents had both a rescue lurcher and a rescue greyhound. They both loved anything fishy and would have sardines regularly. After having them slobber near your face stinking of fish, it's put me off sardines a tad! I think that was on the advice of the vet for the greyhound, as the condition of its coat was disgusting when they took it in. I suppose it helps with joint health too for dogs that have been raced to the point of collapse. When you see the state of some of these ex-racing greyhounds, it makes you wonder about the ethics of greyhound racing.
