TWTD weight loss/health thread 19:10 - Jun 27 with 9110 viewsJ2BLUE

As discussed in the other thread.

If anyone would like to post, please do. We can keep this positive and support each other.

Post only the details you are comfortable with and remember TWTD never forgets.

No gatekeeping here. Obviously not everyone wants to lose weight so if you're looking to maintain or get healthier in general or you are underweight and looking to build up to a healthy weight please feel free to post.

If you think you may have an eating disorder please talk to someone. One of the many options out there: https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/eati

Mental health included so if anyone wants to talk about anything at all please feel free.

Hopefully there's a bit of interest. If you're not interested please hide the thread. Cheers.

Truly impaired.

This is maybe a bit superficial but it's a mental positive for me: I was pretty fit when I was younger, but after I stopped playing football (two/three times a week during the season) I lost my six-pack and had what looked like a bit of a pod there, although I could never grab much in the way of 'flabbiness'.

Ten years or so later I started doing sit ups and crunches and after just a few weeks my body shape changed quite dramatically. That 'fat' belly seems to have been mostly relaxed muscle which has toned up again with less effort than I would have expected.

Not very important in itself, but the message is, you CAN get some really encouraging results if you put the effort in, and you can use the feel-good from those results to drive you on in other ways too.

Going to add my bits here as not sure how to copy and paste my specific posts. And thought it'll be good for this thread.

i've just passed my 6 stone lost since december. I feel amazing. still more to lose, but I Feel great. And now I don't have the reason to why i stopped going to football games.

Well my wife first started with the 1-1 cambridge diet, and although I don't really believe these things, to support her, I partially joined the plan with her but I mix it up. so I do indeed have their shakes, bars, but I also ensure I eat a proper dinner and after a gym session as mentioned just above, I have something protein rich to get the afterburning going.

The exercise is the biggest thing, my wife unfortunately had to have surgery a month into me joining the plan, so whilst she came off plan, i stuck to it, and started going to the gym on my own, it was very nerving, but I set myself a target of 10 minutes. on the fist day, That's all. Not because physically i couldn't do more, but more that i was by myself and if i can do 10 minutes then the next time i can do more.

So fast forward, im doing gym 4 mornings a week, an hour at a time, eating well. Drink - very rarely now, literally only on social occasions and limited to spirits no beers.

Actually will share, i've not had the courage, but this morning, I went swimming at on my own too, which was again, nerving, but loved it.

Are you able to share the reason what stopped you from going to games?

I’ve just had a chicken and lamb shish kebab and ate the pitta bread and now feel disappointed No sort of bread for nearly 4 days.

A simple fix albeit one that requires some daily motivation: walking. Daily walk/s adding up to 3 or 4 miles will after a few months produce visible weight loss. Go solo or find a walking partner and have at it. It’s free and you’ll feel the mental benefits, too.

Obviously this is not revolutionary or groundbreaking but I can say from experience it works.

Don't worry about the pitta. A standard pitta is about 150 kcals. Once in a while it won't hurt you, even if it was a white one.

Fair play to you for sharing that.

Shedding 6 stone is a fantastic achievement and deciding to do something and actually sticking to it is the biggest part of the battle.

However, that 1-1 Cambridge diet sounds like something hideous from the Paul Lambert days!

I spent a couple of summers eating only salad for main meals. Usually featuring a small amount of meat, fish, egg or cheese, but mostly lettuce, tomato and cucumber (sometimes black olives). Not sure exactly how much weight I may have lost, I wasn't measuring properly (possibly a stone or so). But definitely slimmed down a bit and felt lighter.

It wasn't a chore, had a bit of dressing, used to make it myself sometimes. The biggest issue was constanly having to buy lettuce, because it goes off so quickly and I'd get through a pair of Little Gems in a couple of days.

Cycling seconded - mentioned on the healthy eating thread that getting back on the bike (after about 15 years off it) helped me to drop 20kg and keep it off.

(Also mentioned in the other thread) Friends have got results joining their local groups with these guys - https://manvfatfootball.org/ Aimed at those who are overweight but want to get back to playing football; teams win points based on how much weight they lose as well as how they do on the pitch.

Walking suggested too in the post you replied to, but (as I also mentioned in the healthy eating thread) the important thing is to find forms of exercise you enjoy and can fit around your lifestyle; if it's something you don't look forward to, or end up trying to justify not doing because it clashes with other commitments, much less likely to succeed.

That kebab sounds delicious. When you break it down it's not too bad a meal. Lots of salad, lots of protein, some carbs. Just go gentle on the sauce and just balance it out with the rest of your weeks diet. Don't beat yourself up in participating in food you like, just do it as a treat.

Since MarkTWTD has posted this link elsewhere,

https://gnr2024.co.uk/

I met MarkTWTD randomly, and when he asked for help I made him an excel spreadsheet for calculating calories, tracking workouts, and tracking body measurements.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/wwxd06jrxjqcbma4elftx/PPL.xlsx?rlkey=y0n0drwcom2d

I sent him a couple of books to read.

The first book being The Worlds Fittest Book by Ross Edgley, I wanted him to learn about nutrition and fitness, not just follow a diet and do set workouts.

Mark used Nutracheck, an app I can't recommend enough. He invested in a slow cooker, an air fryer, a PT, he invested in himself.

Mark and I are on a different forum, and somebody on there bet him that he wouldn't last.

Mark is half the man he was, that's just in bodyweight. He's a machine. I'm in awe of him. He's done something utterly incredible.

His health, mental and physical, has improved greatly. I'm proud to have been involved and help him.

Anyway, that's enough about Mark for now.

Me? I'm struggling.

I changed job from container ships to super yachts. A friend of mine encouraged this telling me I would have a better life, and much better food.

I don't, the food is just as bad as container ships and I'm struggling with eating healthy. These yachties are superficial tossers, and I don't fit in.

I've been to the gym 3 times this week, having done PPL (Push Pull Legs), so that's something.

But right now, I'm bloated and feeling pretty ill.

Indeed.

I make sure I do at least 10,000 steps every day now and I find that even if I have a cheat takeaway or a few cold beers once or twice a week, it offsets it and doesn't punish you on the scales. Stick a watch on the wrist and it's incredible how the steps mount up. If I'm short by 2 or 3 thousand in the evening, a half hour walk tops it up and if I'm in the mood, go beyond and get closer to 15.

There's some great spots in this part of the world to walk in too. Some that I didn't even know about. I've downloaded 'Komoot' to my phone which even navigates you down footpaths and has some great circular walks varying in length, gradients and difficulty.

I do sometimes get to the gym early in the morning for an hour before I have to start work but to be honest, I really struggle to do this without the light of the summer months. In fact, I feel that I have to compensate for the misery of October-March Britain by making a real effort April-Sep.

A lot of my job involves sitting and driving so I do sometimes envy those in more manual jobs (not often mind) who are able to burn calories as they work.

As for food. I try and be low-carb as much as I can. I eat breakfast as late as possible in order to have an eating window and a fasting period. I've lost three and a half stone over the last three years by literally making small adjustments and maintaining. I started by using the books that Michael Mosley contributed to and they are by far, the best and most sustainable plans/regimes that I've ever used, mainly because the principles apply whether you are dieting or maintaining a lifestyle.

Ideally, I want to lose another half stone but I'm not noticeably overweight and am at the stage where I can be 4 or 5 lbs either way without feeling like crap or guilty if I have a blow out.

This is an excellent good thread idea by the way. Especially if we can incorporate some mental health support with it, and more than happy to contribute.

NewcyBlue/Ken has just been absolutely incredible over the past 12 months... his support has been invaluable to my success. He's nudged me in all the right directions. Never said I couldn't achieve something whilst still remaining realistic. And yes, even having books delivered to my house with the message "Read this, then read it again!"

It's true to say that I wouldn't have been as successful as I have been without his guidance. I wouldn't have joined the gym. I wouldn't be preparing to run the Great North Run. I wouldn't be getting ready for my first tattoo. I wouldn't be as confident. I wouldn't have discovered how much I love gym life. It has been life changing!

https://gnr2024.co.uk/who-is-coach-ken/

The Nutracheck app is really good. I used MyFitnessPal a few years ago but didn't do anything serious with it. Nutracheck is very similar. I paid a small annual fee to unlock some features but that isn't essential. I scan barcodes and weigh everything I consume. "What gets measured gets improved" being one of Ken's phrases drummed into me early on. "It'll become the norm" he said and it's true, it does become just a normal part of meal prep.

I started out ordering Huel products but in the first chats with Ken he suggested Protein Works instead saying that he preferred the taste and they had a better carb profile. So I placed my first order for diet meal replacement shakes with them. Day One of my new diet was 21st July last year and it was the Protein Works products that were delivered first. Huel, despite being on a next day delivery, didn't arrive for another two days. I still have the Huel products in their original box, unopened.

A couple of weeks in and Ken told me about a guy called Scott Baptie. He had a Food For Fitness website and created some great high protein recipes. He also had an app which is now my go-to for recipes including some amazing currys!

https://gnr2024.co.uk/category/nutrition/

I started out weighing 109.9kg and ended up losing 42kg over 10 months. A healthy high protein diet cutting out all processed foods, sweets, biscuits, cakes, pizza, takeaways, etc. It became quite easy once I got into the routine. Routine became very important in helping me form new habits.

Six weeks in, at the beginning of September last year, I joined the gym and took on a personal trainer. This helped give me focus but was vital if I were to have any chance of reaching my ultimate goals which were always about more than 'just' losing weight. I'm in the gym seven days a week. I have four structured training sessions (Push, Pull, Legs and Body Building/Strength Training) built around compound exercises - Bench Press, Barbell Row, Barbell Squat and Deadlift - plus lunges, chest press, shoulder press, lat pull down, cable row, bicep and tricep curls, leg press, leg curl, etc etc etc, with my personal trainer Matt. I usually visit the gym at least twice a day and throw in additional cardio such as treadmill or rowing machine.

https://gnr2024.co.uk/the-first-six-months/

In just over 10 weeks I'll be heading up to the North East, to NewcyBlue territory, to get ready for the Great North Run on 8th September. Not something I ever thought I'd be doing, but when chatting to Ken last year we both thought it would be something good for me to aim for. I'm running it in aid of Bowel Cancer UK.

The GNR is not my main goal, it's just a "bit of fun" along the way. One more thing to tick off my list of goals.

Brilliant post. Massive respect to you.

Already this thread is helping to motivate and push myself further.

If you see this Newcy, are there any Protein Works shakes which have the texture of Huel? I love the coffee caramel RTD but open to other suggestions.

Truly impaired.
