If the fee is too much, that may well rule out Southampton too you'd have thought so maybe he'll be sent out on loan again.

Saints have a year of PL money in their rolling 3 year accounts whereas we have a year in L1 unfortunately.

Think the fee is the issue on Downes, as I understand it. Might prove to much for us unfortunately.

Presume that’s West Ham wanting more than we value Downes at, rather than we can’t physically afford him? Think it’s been reported West Ham want around £15M, which seems slightly inflated, but I’d have guessed a deal around £10M with add-ons could be enough, surely we can afford that.

I know you’ve previously said the bigger money is likely to be spent on Hutchinson and a striker, but getting a decent central midfielder to play with Morsy is going to be vital for us to stay up, in my opinion.

Yes, more than we value him at or are willing to spend as we've obviously got money. I agree on central midfielder being very much required.

Funnily enough we had a much better financial year in 22/23, despite being two divisions below!

We claimed a FFP loss of £12.4M from memory, which gives us a £600K underspend to carry forward from that season.

Southampton lost £87M, which suggests a PSR overspend to carry forward in the region of £40M. They made huge transfer sales in 23/24 though, so must be in a better situation now.

No thanks.

I'm sorry, but I'm with Arnie. When we were at our lowest, he wanted out. Now that we are at our highest, he wants back in.

Don't look back.

That's complete nonsense. Any League One player would welcome a chance to play in the Premier League as a dream move. Of course he wanted to play at a higher level, and that's regardless of the state we were in.

I'd imagine he still wants to play in the Premier League, whether that's with us, Southampton, West Ham or whoever.

I'm sure most of the squad wanted out in that era, the club was a car crash. Flynn got about half a season of McCarthy before he left, then suffered the triple Pauls, and all under the Evans regime which is by far the worst in the entire history of the club. No player worth anything wants to hang around under that stewardship. I'd love to have him back.

That makes no sense at all. A player who stepped up to realise his potential shouldn't be on our radar cos he left when we were sh1ite?

Further to that he plays in a style and in a position we're going to crying out for next season.

Ok maybe that was a bit harsh on him, but he did behave like one. Maybe that’s why people booed him during Saints game? I don’t know, but I wasn’t one of them. He went about it the wrong way in my (and few others ) opinions. Do I hold that against him now? Maybe but I’m open to persuasion that he’s not got that in his personal locker, which is why on this thread I said no I’d not like him back. I didn’t have time when I’d posted that to qualify why I’d said no. But I have now in a post today. As I’ve said I’m not questioning his obvious football attributes, just his personality and would it fit with this squad of players and the Club’s new ethos. There really is no conspiracy here, you know . But as is so often on this forum I’m gaslighted for voicing ANY opinion ( even though it aligns with others views).

Who is gaslighting you? Having your words quoted back at you isn't gaslighting. Gaslighting is deliberately damaging someone's mental health by coercing them into questioning the facts of what they have seen or heard through repetitively insisting on things that aren't true.

The argument here seems to come down to you questioning FD's attitude because he wanted away from Town, versus others who say things were toxic at the club at the time, that he has said it was impacting his mental health, and so it is understandable that he wanted away.

At one of the best options (price, age, ability, etc.) for desperately needed CM competition and upgrade? Irrelevant he was here previously.

The circumstances of his departure are kind of relevant though. The club was a complete basket case, with no investment in anything. Why on earth should any of our better, young players want to stick around? It's their career. In 99% of cases players aren't playing for their club because they are fans, even though some of course are. Its a job.

With yours and Arners' logic, someone who leaves a job for a better offer or a break or whatever should never be re-employed by the company they left, even if a few years down the line they have developed a great skill or address book of client, or whatever. It's absurd logic, and luckily ITFC isn't run by emotive fans :)

Logic has gone out the window here.

I get that, in a way, but it's absurd nonetheless.

Of course we’ll need a number of signings absolute min 7 and possibly as many as 10.

Keepers - we have 3 and all 3 might be leaving so we’d need a min 2 signings there if that happens. Looks like we’re planning at least 1 to come in so in essence we’re looking at signing min 1 keeper and max 3

Defenders - we have 6 and we’ll 2 for every position so there will be at least 2 to come in, maybe 3 (not counted Johnson as signed yet)

Midfielders- we have 3 plus Humphreys as an u21 and we’ll definitely want at least 1 more hence Downes talk so min 1 max 2

Wingers and Attacking Mids - we have 4 and we’ll want a min 6 but more likely more as KMac likes to keep those positions fresh with lots of substitutions so guess min 3 max 4 (not included Omari as done)

Numbers 9’s We’ve got Hirst and Ali and we’ll want 3 so min 1 and poss 2 if Ali gets loaned out.

So not sure why you’d be surprised by the probability of lots of signings.

"Keepers - we have 3 and all 3 might be leaving"

Must say I was unaware of that, guess I should keep up more!

I thought we'd sign several - just not 10!

Whilst leeds didn't get promoted and they bottled the ending. Their two games against us was imo a sign of what we will face every week this season and why we will see a large number of signings, our squad isn't ready to cope with that every game.

Fair point & I understand that, but will still worry about such a big influx into the dressing room, given how important togetherness as a tight-knit group & team spirit were to us in the past two seasons.

With all the players that have already departed, including loans and the need to add quality, 6 or so players would never be enough.

I had this chat with my son yesturday, we've lost Ball, haven't heard anything about Aluko joining the staff and we've lost Jackson, it would be good to see a couple of really experienced pro's coming in who can obviously add quality but also replace that calm headed approach to football.

Interesting re Aluko, thought a major part of him staying on our books last season was with a view to him joining our coaching staff now. Hope he stays.

With players like FD I always get caught between the heart of he left us so do one and the head of he could be a great asset in our aging midfield.
I'm not sure who is about at a similar price, but under KM he could shine.
I'm also reminded that club legends Wark and Mariner threatened to down tools due to wages and are still (rightly) regarded as legends, particularly Wark when he came back.
Football by it's very nature is a little flakey when judging players and the expectations of loyalty we place on them.
Head says take a look at FD if he's available.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.
