Poll: Has our squad been improved this summer?

Indeed, but we're not going to be able to afford all of them. Johnson will come in on a free, probably one or two others ideally, then there'll be a few £5m-ish signings probably.

Presumably Johnson’s ‘fee’ will take the form of a nice juicy signing on fee for him and his agent? So very much not free and also eating into the transfer kitty.

But still cheaper than paying a £15m fee.

Yep I get that we’d not sign all of those players but it does seem like Town are looking at 2 expensive left sided defenders in Greaves and Jayden from Holland probably with a view to getting one, and Downes as a potential central midfielder and Omari + 1 for the attacking midfield/wide positions and Fotis the Greek up front so that still feels like Omari plus 4 in the £15-20m range (give or take) and even then we’d need another 4/5 on top which increasingly looks like one of those will need to be a new first choice keeper.

The thing that’s almost convinced me of this is the Fotis the Greek link, I was really surprised we’d sink that sort of money into that position given my starting assumption that we’d be looking for someone to share minutes with Hirst rather than usurp Hirst as first choice because we’d get more value in upgrading other positions.

I know his agent at Wasserman, we tried very hard last year to get him, but we couldn't compete then with Southampton on wages. I know he's spoken to McKenna, reckon we stand a really good chance if they want him...especially given his partner is from Ipswich and he's still good mates with Wolfie.

I'd love to see him back.

Morsy and him in central midfield…bloody hell! That kind of aggression could be very useful.

Definitely need to upgrade all those positions and confident most of those names have been identified for those roles. The Dutch fella not so sure, but we'll definitely need a left-back. Greek lad is definitely a target, but I think that may be getting a little rich for us.

We need a Dutch fella, this is a must have - doesn't matter where he plays. Can you have a word with Ashton for us as I feel that a premier league season without a Dutch player is a very bad omen.

Give him a nudge! I know we were keen but was told the terms West Ham wanted were well beyond us, so no surprise Saints nabbed him. From what I gather, and partly for the reasons you cite, if all things were equal, he'd rather come here.

Was there anything real in the Brandon Vasquez link in Jan? He looked a very KMac striker from the normal YouTube misleading highlights.

If we say Johnson and Hutchinson are done then I'd be quite happy if we can get Jacob Greaves In defence, Downes or Sheaf in midfield and the Greek fella up front.

I think we’ll surely need at least one more than Omari in the three behind Hirst and the Greek lad and a goalie of course if Vaz departs

I'd love to see Flynn back here.

I sponsored him for a season, just before/as he was breaking into the first team. He was really, really highly thought of by the coaching staff at the time. They knew he was going to be an excellent player and could go far.

We met a few times during the season, normally at the training ground. It was a pleasure to have a coffee with him and chat. A nice young lad, respectful and unassuming. He loved it at Ipswich.

It was a real shame when he left and there was a lot of unfair criticism of him.

He's blossomed now, so for sure I'd love to see him back here. If he did return, I would hope every fan gives him 100% support because he would deserve that.

I don't understand this narrative. He wanted a move to the Premier, Ipswich as a club, team, business were going backwards and very quickly, everyone could see it. If we had had any other decent players they'd have wanted out too. We were a basketcase under Evans and Lambert.

What did he do that was so wrong? Asked not to be selected for one match? Maybe there's more to it that I'm not aware of, maybe there's more from Downes side to tell too.

I'd love to see him here, great age, Prem experience and a real classy player with a bit of bite.

The way he was treated and the way the club's duty of care towards him at the time was shocking. I wish I'd have known sooner, but it's one of many reasons the GC era is night and day to back then.

The fact we had him, Dozzell, Nydam and Bishop on the books at once and only he really fulfilled his potential for various reasons is a terrible shame. The fact he's suffered a lot too is shameful really.

Him and Woolfenden in the Prem together would be fantastic.

Would be absolutely delighted if we can get this one done. He's comfortably first choice as a realistic CM signing, imo. Sheaf is a good player but no real experience at this level and whilst I've thought he's looked good when I've seen him play, I've not seen him consistently boss games in the way that Downes has almost every game I've seen him play.

He was quality here, got thrown under the bus by a hopeless manager, shipped out by another hopeless manager, and has had to work hard to get his chance at top flight football since. He looks ready to properly make that step up now, he'd settle in easily here, and £15m for someone coming into their best years who can bring what he brings to the midfield feels like a great bit of business.

Mullet: you say FD has suffered a lot too. What has he suffered?

I am of the same mind as Bigalhunter regarding the way he went about things, downing tools, throwing his toys out of his pram etc , just when we needed him most, he wanted away but went about it in a very unprofessional and some would say, petulant way. It was a bad time for us as a club and like Bigalhunter, I too, lost all respect for him for that. I’m finding it hard atm to let go of that disappointment in him. BUT if he rejoined us, I have absolutely no doubt he’d be a very, very good signing. I do have respect for his football qualities, ( I certainly was not one of those who booed him when he returned with Saints, which was a ridiculous response by some sector of fans). I’m just not so sure about whether his personal attributes would fit with the players we now have in our squad. Would his personality fit with our new club ethos?

I think is easy to forget just how bad things were at the club and also how much that must have affected players. I dont know all the ins and outs of what happened but I'm sure there was fault on both sides.

He would fit the way the we play so well and would be a signing for the future so if he comes back its a fresh start for him and the club

I too didn’t like what I saw with Downes attitude wise. It felt like he was agitating for a move long before he left. But that was just my perception.

It has to be remembered he was in a cesspit of a club when here and nobody truly knows what happened with him. Most important of all we don’t know him as a person. I doubt he will return, not least because of the cost, but if he did I am sure the club would have done their homework and most importantly everyone would give him their full support.

As for the crowd booing him, that’s nothing. Jason Dozzell got absolute pelters when he came back here with spurs yet to this day he’s a club legend and rightly so.
