Same here. Terrible commentator, albeit seems a nice bloke.

Used to dread the words "and we now hand over to your commentary team, Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend".

Never liked Tyldesley much either, all far too contrived, although he’s been a bit better since he lost the main role McCoist is also a much better foil than the dreadful Townsend was.

Can I add Lee Dixon to the crap commentators list here.

He reminds me of Lawrenson with his patronising and monotone drawl. Unless England win 5-0 he’s utterly depressing and Samaritans probably dread hearing that he’s covering a game.

Lee Dixon is basically an unfunny Karl Pilkington. This thread has really highlighted just what a loss John Motson was. What I would give for him and Ally McCoist together.

Their voices bring back memories of listening to Town in Europe in the 70s.

Peter Jones describing Paul Mariners power header v Liverpool in 1976 on BBC Radio 2 here from 2:04 onwards... goosebumps.

Alan Green refused to visit Russia for the world cup and next time his contract with the Beeb came up, it was not renewed. I presume he's happily retired now

Tbf by the end he was increasingly a parody of himself, spent more time moaning about the commentary view or something else that had annoyed him at a game then tell you what was happening.

But at least he knew how to broadcast on radio, a skill modern commentators don't have.

As for Tyldesley, used to dislike his style of commentary, mainly as it was so biased to Man Utd, I've come to warm to him lately after he was given the push towards the exit, though I thought he was terrible last night, not that the game helped

Alan Green was a good commentator who unfortunately got too full of himself towards the end of his career & became irritating as a result.

I remember Bryon Butler as a good 'un, TWTD.

Jonathan Pearce was brilliant when he was doing the commentary on Capital Radio during Euro 96. Especially the 4 goals against Holland. He went completely downhill when he switched to TV.

Edit - found this on You Tube. can't believe it's the same person as Mr Monotone!

Yeah that does sound very different.

I probably couldn't have even told you that was Pearce without time to work it out.

Have to say I've always thought he was awful as well. Have found the social media stuff bemoaning his departure bizarre.

it's largely in comparison to matterface, i reckon. i think being with mccoist has raised his game somewhat too

Bryon Butler was excellent. Didn’t like Alan Green. He’d ramble on with his own opinions and you were left not knowing what was going on in the game.
