Siege mentality fully in place in the England camp 08:56 - Jul 1 with 5330 viewsunstableblue

And maybe something they can use to their advantage.

I think the usual England fan and English media frenzy has kicked in and I can’t remember it being so negative.

Yes of course we’ve looked disjointed and miles away from the pace and free flowing nature of Spain and Germany. But we are through. And I thought Slovakia came at us with a very good press and game plan, and as in the group games a very low block at times.

Clearly the players are feeling hard done by the media and home fans - and they’re creating that siege mentality that has served some teams well.

The team can only get better, and I think Mainoo and Rices improved form is something to build on. The Swiss may try and be more adventurous which may suit the team.

Maybe one more tweak in the front four needed.

The loss of Guehi is a blow, as he’s settled in well, and feels dependable.

I do think sometimes honesty goes a long way.

Just say we've not played our best and we'll try and do better next game. I'm not sure what the tactics are, but the team look a bit clueless.

All this "we've been good blah blah" is very tiresome.

In 1990, the press were calling "SEND THEM HOME!" after the group stage, and some disgraceful comments about Bobby Robson.*
We were poor until we played Germany.
In 1992 we were awful, really poor, far worse than this.

*I kept a scrapbook so have the evidence.

Closely followed by Foden, even though he's performed better than Bellingham since the Serbia game.

Foden thinks he's the B0ll0cks and tries all these world beater passes all the time, and fails. Also why is he the Freekick taker too. We have various other players who are better (Trippier being one!)

Exactly this.

The only thing that’s got us this far is simply the strength of our squad. As soon as we play a half decent team we’ll lose.. Most likely Switzerland on Saturday.

All I’d like to see is Gareth play players in their actual positions and maybe try and attack teams from time to time.

I don't disagree that we have not played well - England are miles from where we or they would want to be. But this Shearer-led "we were very lucky because we scored with our only shot on target in the 95th minute" does completely ignore Rice hitting the post, Kane somehow heading wide from directly in front, and Foden's inexplicable failure to stay onside. The Bellingham goal was by far and away the most difficult of those chances.

And how Slovakia finished the 90 minutes with 11 men still on the field is one of the wonders of modern refereeing.

Looking forwards there is also a narrative that we will need to be ten times better against Switzerland because they nearly beat Germany (their second strong) and put Italy out (who were abysmal) - lets not forget that Switzerland contrived to give the worst team in this championship their only point.

Well, you’ve given me reasons to be positive. Thank you.

And you’re right, Kucka (their 19), should’ve had 6 yellow cards.

I think by 'rubbish' he means stuff like the players families getting abuse and having stuff thrown on them. Yes, the racist abuse they get. Stuff like this just shouldn't happen however badly they play. (And I've seen plenty worse England teams).

Bellingham now being investigated by UEFA for grabbing his crotch in celebration.

He’s clearly a next level footballer but maybe needs to work on his maturity now.*

*I don’t personally care that he grabbed his crotch, UEFA are stupid and just looking for trouble (or a fine to pay for the closing ceremony drinks party), he just needs to be more aware of how this goes down.

I think we all agree that England have been poor, the opposition have sat back and challenged us.

However, if the England players are going to go ahead with this narrative of everyone against us, up the media etc then the best thing to happen could be Bellingham getting a one game ban.

Firstly, that stuff is not offensive and is not worthy of a ban. But if UEFA do ban him, that would unite the fans and players, give them a right rocket and give them the extra chips on their shoulder to at least get us to the semis. Also means Southgate can change it up.

Beat the swiss and then get an amped up Bellingham for the semis, win that and get spanked in the final by Spain!

Hi Gareth!

Only joking, but I do think you're clutching at straws somewhat and seem to be a bit of a cheerleader for England on here. I'm sorry, saying "But we are through" isn't good enough. "Slovakia came at us with a very good press and game plan" isn't good enough - they're 44th in the world.

We are through by the skin on the skin on the skin of our teeth. There's only so far you can go on luck and we've fluked our way through so far. Southgate needs to take the shackles off, play the most in-form players in their correct positions, and tell them to go for it. Or we will be out. At the moment, all this sideways/backwards nonsense reminds me of Ipswich under Lambert. The annoying thing is England do have the quality!

Also, if you can’t remember it being so negative you must have a very short memory. It's been like this - and worse - loads of times over the years. Bellingham can bleat all he wants but the public and the pundits are only saying what they see. Goal aside, he's been one of the poorest performers so far. Quit wingeing and up your game!

Spot on. Can’t really add to that. We’ve been stinking the tournament out and if the players want to have a moan up about criticism before heading to the hair stylists, perhaps they should have a good look at the four games and their ‘contribution’ to the mess.

I don’t expect them to match a team as strong as Spain, an organised mob like Germany or a good side like France with its real international players, but I think they are a lot better than the negative, miserable shambles we’ve seen so far.

Switzerland are a lot better than the four played so far. I bet they can’t wait to play England. It’s up to England to sort themselves out, improve and do them.
